Pursue A Career In STEM With The Help Of Educational Advancement Alliance's HBCU-STEM Fellowship Program

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on January 04, 2011 FEATURED Content According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics there are an expected 2.7 million new jobs to be added in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields by 2018 but yet The Council of State Governments reports that only 13 states in the U.S. including New York, Delaware and New Jersey are targeting low-income, female and minority students to pursue a career in STEM. The Educational Advancement Alliance is changing all that by administrating their third year of a successful Fellowship Program. Sponsored by the National Nuclear Security Administration, the HBCU-STEM Fellowship Program provides financial support to college graduates pursing Master’s degrees in STEM. This Fellowship addresses a national issue of the lack of STEM majors in colleges and universities particularly in underrepresented groups. Graduates of a four (4) year college or university designated as a Historically Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU), as determined by the White House Initiative on HBCUs, have the opportunity to obtain up to $77,000 in financial assistance to purse a master’s degree in STEM areas at a college or university in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware or Washington, D.C with the Fellowship. To be eligible for the Fellowship an applicant must be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident, along with additional requirements, and study in STEM areas in a master’s degree program. An applicant must also have graduated from a HBCU on or after January 1, 2009. Applications for this Fellowship must be postmarked by March 18, 2011. The HBCU-STEM Fellowship Program not only awards financial support to its Fellows but monitors the progress of each individual from the beginning to completion of graduate studies. “We Provide the Means to Take You to the Next Step” Additional information about the HBCU-STEM Fellowship Program can be obtained by visiting www.gradopp.org or contacting James Mitchell at (215) 471-7170. Fellows of the HBCU-STEM Fellowship Program obtained their undergraduate degrees from 40 HBCUs across the country including Florida A & M University, Grambling State University, Delaware State University, Howard University, Alcorn University, Morehouse University, Elizabeth City State University, South Carolina State University and many more. To date the Fellowship has provided the means to finance 116 Fellows in obtaining a Master’s degree at colleges or universities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware and Washington, D.C. such as New Jersey Institute of Technology, Drexel University, Carnegie Mellon University, Pennsylvania State University, Princeton University, Rutgers University, Stevens Institute of Technology and others. Their areas of study were in the fields of Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering, Chemistry, Microbiology and Immunology, Information Systems Management and Poultry Science amongst others.
