Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 09, 2011 The United Negro College Fund – marks the 32nd anniversary of its annual television special, An Evening of Stars, with a glittering concert tribute to 10-time Grammy Award-winner Chaka Khan. Presented by Target, UNCF’s An Evening of Stars Tribute to Chaka Khan will air throughout the U.S. on January 29th & 30th, 2011 on KNBC Los Angeles, WOR-9 New York, WGN Chicago, BET and leading network stations in more than 40 other major cities. A legendary vocalist, songwriter and performer whose enduring career spans four decades, Khan is the eighth recipient of UNCF’s prestigious Award of Excellence, the highest honor for a career of service in music and the performing arts. Known for such hits as “I’m Every Woman,” “Tell Me Something Good” and “Through The Fire,” Ms. Khan follows in the footsteps of R&B greats Lou Rawls (2004), Quincy Jones (2005), Stevie Wonder (2006), Aretha Franklin (2007), Smokey Robinson (2008), Patti LaBelle (2009) and Lionel Richie (2010).. Honoring Khan with performances of many of her best-known songs are El Debarge (“Hollywood”), Faith Evans (“What Cha’ Gonna Do For Me”), Fantasia (“Tell Me Something Good”), Melanie Fiona (“You Got The Love”), Ginuwine (“Superlife”), Bettye LaVette (“Love Me Still”), Ledisi (“Sweet Thing”), Angie Stone (“Please Pardon Me”) and Stevie Wonder (Medley). Performing a duet are Chaka’s brother, Mark Stevens and her daughter, Indira Khan (“Do You Love What You Feel?”) Joining the performers in celebrating Chaka’s longstanding support of UNCF are Academy Award winner Mo’Nique, Taraji P. Henson, Boris Kodjoe and Nicole Ari Parker, Shaun Robinson, Akon, Tom Joyner, Glee’s Amber Riley, Lauren Velez, Levar Burton and Bobbe J. Thompson, Presenting the award to Miss Khan with UNCF President and CEO Dr. Michael Lomax are 2005 and 2006 Award of Excellence recipients Quincy Jones and Stevie Wonder. In addition to two biographical packages about Chaka Khan’s life and career, the program tells the compelling stories of three students helped by UNCF. In “Randy’s Quest,” “Nile’s Journey” and “Dr. Gray’s Commitment,” viewers learn what UNCF is doing to promote higher education and support President Obama’s mission to once again make America the world’s leader in college graduates. In addition to presenting sponsor, Target, national sponsors of UNCF’s An Evening of Stars are McDonald’s and AT&T. American Airlines is the official airline of UNCF. BET Networks, WGN America, Wells Fargo are Official sponsors. U.S. Army debuts as the show’s major sponsor. And UNCF welcomes Clear Channel as national media partner. Executive Producer and Director of the tribute is six-time Emmy Award winner Louis J. Horvitz whose credits include numerous years directing The Academy Awards, The Kennedy Center Honors and The American Film Institute (AFI) Life Achievement Award tributes in addition to The Grammy Awards. Producers of the program are Cort Casady, Bill Urban and Deborah Read. UNCF’s An Evening of Stars has won two NAACP Image Awards, one for its 2006 tribute to Stevie Wonder and one for its 2008 tribute to Smokey Robinson.
