Finding the Right Job in 2011
|
Posted By: How May I Help You NC on January 14, 2011 FEATURED Content by Adam Eisenstein Finding a job is a bit like managing your love life; if it’s not working, you need to try something new. Always fixated on the unattainable lover? Maybe you should widen your field. Is your plan of asking them out every day and sometimes twice not getting results? Maybe you need to back off a bit and give them some space. Are the dreamy, artsy types all taken? Maybe that practical but steady partner would be right for you. Let me give you three reasons for hope and three tactics to help your job search in 2011. Reason to hope: More jobs are being created every day. I know that it’s true at McGraw-Hill. Data like this is encouraging. While there are more new jobs being created, it’s also job churn that will open up other positions, as people leave for new opportunities. But I’m not even asking you to start obsessing over employment polls and statistics, since that will drive you crazy thinking about all of the external forces that are out there that you can’t control. Plus, the jobs they are talking about might not apply to your industry anyway. Telling you that unemployment went down 0.2% is the equivalent of your mother telling you that “there are plenty of fish in the sea.” It might actually be true, but it doesn’t feel true.
