Do a search on high interest, little to no credit loan. They do have them but make sure you read the fine print. There are companies out there that do prey on college students in your situation but there are also companies that do understand. In the case of this loan, you won't need a co-signer. The amount allowed may be smaller but anything will help. Because of the stipulations on some of these loans, I say be careful or not do them.
On the other hand, see if you can get another family member to co-sign and explain that there are no payments due until 6 months after you graduate. They will only be required to pay if you default or fail to pay. hope that helps!
Cool. Because I know Hampton students usually post in the Hampton thread but I don't think thats going to happen this year either.
Howard U C/O 2011.
But its cute that you are so excited. Enjoy your curfew!
Hello My New Bison and Bisonettes,
Some of you may have seem my post from Facebook but if you haven't...
I have a website for my upcoming book and it is also a social commentary blog, basically, I have created a quick reference guide for all things Howard. I have tried to answer a lot of your questions and any others that may arise before you arrive in August. I hope you are all excited and if you see me on the yard, don't be afraid to say hello. Visit the site at poeticsnoire.com. If you would like to be included in my poetry anthology, the submission guidelines are also there. Any questions you feel I have left out, just leave me a comment on the website!

Yeah but not everything goes as planned so I am giving her the other option if she does decide to go.
There are a lot of rooms that are off line because Howard refuses to fix them ....thats not your fault but its our issue. My friends and I have written letters to residence life before and until more people do something..nothing will done to fix it.
If you call and ask them about the off line room situation and they lie and say no....trust me its true because there are two rooms on 4th floor wheatley that flooded this year and will be empty when you arrive in the fall!
you can email me @ berickett@yahoo.com and I will see if I could put you in touch with some people who can help!
I can understand that you are really upset and all but you need to understand that Howard in going through a lot and yeah its not cool but we gotta make do. I am not saying that it is okay for them to do this to you but there are a lot of circumstances to take into consideration which you will see next year. The neighborhood near Howard and Meridian is not as bad as it seems. A lot of single white females live here and run with their boxers all day and night.
I am looking for an investment property to buy right now so I can give you a few tips. You can check apartment listings in washington d.c just by putting that in your search engine. You are looking for property in the Ledroit Park, Bloomindale, Shaw, U Street Market.Zips codes like 20059,20001. Anything NE might be a little too far for you especially as a freshman. Join all the social networking sites such as Myspace and facebook... and put yourself out there that you are looking for a roommate.
I don't know if they still have work for housing but see if you can do anything in the mean time. Ask if they have a waiting list or something too.

Thats the link to the off campus housing list with some good properties.
Howard University also has apartments at UTC. Its a train ride but they are nice.

Scholarships regarding tuition at Howard for first time students are based on SAT and/or ACT scores as well as GPA. I believe a 26 on the ACT and a 3.0 will get your just your tuition paid for. All that information is online though. Please go read the WHOLE website for each college you applying to especially if you cannot visit.
If you are not intending on business, yes Howard is still a good school especially for politically driven people because of our location. We have alumni everywhere and doing everything who are more than willing to give you a job after graduation. This is not what your counselors tell you but as a minority you want to go to the school that will give you a good job after graduation. Don't necessarily look at the rankings of the school...ask questions in regards to your major. What is the rate of people getting jobs? How many business fairs do you offer? It means nothing with a degree from a number 1 school if you can't even get the job afterwards. You are just stuck with piece of paper and bills that you can't pay off.
Didn't choose Howard, Howard chose me! Just keeping it real. I went to a historically black high school and was tired of CP time. Wanted to go back to a PWI so HU wasn't even on my list. I had all my applications out in like October and a recruiter for HU came to my school and I applied like a week before early action and here i am.
I make Howard fun for myself. I do what I like and have a great time doing it! You make your Howard experience!
1) do yall recommend i apply on-line or through the mail
If you apply on line, you will still have to use mail correspondence for some of the application such as rec. letters and transcripts. So i say on-line because it is quicker but don't forget that you will need to use the mail and make COPIES OF EVERYTHING!
2) early action?
OF COURSE! Howard doesn't have early decision so you don't have to feel like you are pressured to make a decision early and be stuck in that choice. However, just in becoming a young adult, DO EVERYTHING EARLY especially with the economy the way it is. Early action means early consideration for everything! SCHOLARSHIPS included!
3) How do yall feel about the area as far safety?
Not playing the bourgeoisie card but lack credibility in the hood department. Am I scared walking around DC??? Not anymore than being a secure government building. There are dangers everywhere and you have to be smart...anywhere you go! So if you put yourself in a position for something to happen then it probably will is all i am saying.
4) Is the metro easy to get to?
Yes
5) Will they mail financial aid info?
Politically correct answer... Yes. The correct answer....No! However, you should be on top of your stuff regardless and check BisonWeb at least once a week. If you don't see anything just call, email, and repeat the cycle. Complaining won't do anything about and it probably won't change so do what you gotta do!
6) Whats your best HU experience?
Some are illegal so I won't list them but basically everything. Even the worst times have been great learning experiences! Graduating for the High School for the Engineering Professions where I was all set to be at the University of Miami doing a dual major in Engineering. I applied to USC, UMiami and UT-Austin which was my backup. Howard wasn't even in the picture and its the only school that I applied to for Communications. How I got here: hell I don't know but I am glad I came. No diss to my future engineers...I will get that degree too just not this go round!
7) How are the dorms?
Horrible in a good way. After you live in like rock bottom without A/C aka the Quad...you get the feeling of empowerment like there is no where to go but up. But you will not be in your room that long anyways so all you technically need is a bed and a place to put your stuff....which the dorms are. I say pick your dorm based on your campus activity level. More active pick the quad. Its cheaper and fits your basic needs. If you like staying in your room more...pick the Annex. (that doesn't mean you have to be a recluse though)
8) How are the professors? and the classes in general as far as size etc...
Well I am bitter because of 2 professors this semester that hoed me major but you will have that ANYWHERE. Most classes are female majority and depending on the class and the time of the class...depends on the class size. Mandatory classes for all freshman will be larger especially if they are offered later in the day.
9) Is there a course about the history of Howard that is required?
No. You however have your respective orientation classes for each college. I had to take SOC (school of communications) orientation. No biggie. If you are learning history especially black history...expect Howard to be taught in that class just because you are at the Mecca of black education and it is a historical figure.
10) What is there to do when class isn't in session?
Whatever you want. Community Service, Activism, Work, Shop, Play, Club/Party, Movies, Premieres, Poetry Jamz, etc. You name it...its there. Its a diverse city and for me...I like underground stuff. I am more of the house party, poetry/ jazz club, exclusive boutique type person. I like going places where people don't really know about it. So when I say you can get into a little bit of everything..I mean it!
As far as your chances of getting in.....use this school of thought. If you want it to happen....do whatever you gotta do to make it happen. Don't doubt yourself and make sure that your application shows confidence in YOU! In no way come off like you have a sense of entitlement but make sure that your application shows that you have a sense of purpose. (community service, school involvement, ap classes) If you adopt that into your daily life, then of course you will get in and you will be able to accomplish anything that way!
GOOD LUCK!
As far as Hampton....um first off...You need to get there first and also learn that the Real Institute is Hampton. The Real UNIVERSITY = Howard! HBCU love nevertheless
hope it helped

HU C/O 2011
Film Production Major
first off....don't listen to what everybody tells you! 10% is helpful and the other 90 is bs! Just apply! Early admission isn't for the best of the best! I mean you should be trying to be your best regardless but the true reason for early admission is for EARLY SCHOLARSHIP CONSIDERATION. Howard gives money out (i know its hard to believe since i didn't see any) on a first come first serve basis. Once it is all gone...its all gone! Apply early to EVERY school.
hope this is 10%!
the math test is basic. I got placed in calculus but only needed to talk Algebra I for my major. I had already taken AP Calc in HS but in my opinion the test doesnt matter because depending on your major you have to take certain courses anyways. just dont put anything in there and you should be fine.
Most majors require Alg 1 and Alg II... Technical Majors require higher. If you are really horrible in math....you can always register for basic math (no credit though) but it will help you learn all the stuff that you might have missed in HS.
You don't register until late July/early August unless you go to Pre-O where they will help you register. The alternate pin is for your second semester and registering for sophomore year and the years after that. Your scheme should be available online if you want to search your classes but web registration does not open up to incoming freshman until the end of the summer! Don't know what your advisor was talking about because if Howard had to give all of their incoming freshman alternate pins with the state of their current communication system....NOBODY would be registering!
Oh and you can't register in the summer if your don't have all your paperwork in or if you haven't taken the math placement test.
Did it last summer and it was nothing to sweat over!
