Well I entered Howard University as a transfer student in the fall of 2007. I'm a Computer Science major and my college requires at least a 2.5 gpa I believe to transfer. But I know from talking to admissions that they let less transfers in then they let in first time students in college in. Howard is a selective school they want the best of the best students to attend their school. The year I attended Howard about 40,000 student applied for the fall 2007 term( I could be wrong it could be a little less or more, but you get my drift) and admissions only let about 2,000 students in(same thing here). Applying early is always a good thing. I applied in October of 2007 and my grades were sent from college in December and I got my acceptance packet in the mail in January. So I received everything pretty quick as compared to some other students. Your essay has to be on point as well. That's one of the most important things next to your grades and extra curricular activities. Howard wants a well rounded student that excels in academics and helps out the community by giving back. If you have anymore questions just ask on here or e-mail me at Krisel1@sbcglobal.net Hope this all helps...
^^^^^since you dont mind .......i was wondering how important of a factor do you think community service is to the admissions committee at howard??and if you dont mind sharing, what were your extracurriculars in high school and how much community service did you have when you applied to howard?? thanks in advanceand to the person that started this thread 1) sorry for being off topic in your thread and2) good luck!! hope you get accepted to howard!!deuces
Howard wants a student who is well rounded. Not someone who is just great in academics but someone who is also as great in extracurricular activites. Community service is important but other activities are as well. It seems like it's been so long since I've been in high school(It's been 2 yrs since I've been out of hs lol), but my activities included Del-Teens(a community service group under Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc.), Campus Ambassadors, French Club, Diversity Club, Oustanding Black Acheivers Club, I did community service at a hospital for two years as a candy striper, I tutored elementary school children in math, I volunteered at a Asthma Clinical Study to help children who had Asthma, and I lectured a class at Washington University Medical School on the seriousness of Asthma for over 2 years. Altogether I have hundreds of hours of community service. But that's all that I had when I applied. If you have any other questions let me know! =)
I wanted to know from howard university transfer students, how easy is it to transfer credits to howard because i was thinking of starting out at a community college in my city and then transfering my english credits to howard, can somebody please give me some insight on how this process works in the admissions office at howard, i would be very greatful for all the help
I know this is late... but I transferred to Howard in the fall of 2007 from a community college. I should have been a sophmore but I was between a freshman and a sophmore. So instead of graduating in 2010 I will graduate in 2011. Howard is very strict with transferring credits. As someone stated earlier a lot of people do have to start all over. My friend who transferred to Howard the same time I did was suppose to be a junior but instead was a freshman all over again. She ended up transferring back to the school she came from. Just take basic classes like college math, english, a social science class, history, etc. And they will transfer. All my english credits, math credits, and social science credits transferred but a few of them didn't transfer. It also depends what school you enter, I was initially in the school of engineering and they were very strict with credits. But it all depends on what classes you take.
Well, I guess it would depend on the reason why a person left. If the person didn't have a good experience at that particular university, I wouldn't suggest them to go back. If there were no problems at the university, then it shouldn't be a problem to go back there. I just tend to like new beginnings, but everyone is different. There are so many colleges out there; I would suggest someone to try something new and meet new people.
In my question I asked if someone has went back to a university they left and how was the transition back not if you think they should go back and what was the reason they left. Thanks for your input though.
Are you asking about a person dropping out of school and returning, or are you asking about a person who transferred from a particular university and eventually returned back to that school?
A person who transferred from a university and decided to come back...
I love Howard! I first went there in the fall of 2007 as a transfer student I came back home and am now attending school back here in missouri at a local university but I am going back to Howard in the fall of 2009 I'll be about a junior/senior. I love HU so much that I must go back! lol Now if you're a big city person Howard is for you. DC is a very vibrant city with so much culture and activity going around that you will never be bored! The dorms are better at Howard. I lived in Cook my first year there and that is one of the best dorms. But the only people who live there either are athletes, on scholarship, or extremely lucky. The freshman dorms aren't bad but you do have to deal with community bathrooms but they are kept up pretty good. The looks of the campus aren't too bad. Most of the buildings are kept up pretty well, most dorms look great on the outside amd inside. Academic wise Howard has it going on. All of my professors were very challenging. They always made me think beyond what was stated in the text. I attempted to take Calculus l at Howard and ended up dropping it like most of my class did later on during the semester. Most of the people I know would tell you to take higher math classes such as Calculus and such at either a community college or some other school just because that is a harder subject and my teacher was not the best at teaching it. I always felt that I was learning and never felt a dull moment in my academic experience. Fashion is a big thing at Howard. Like someone already stated girls wear heels to classes, put make up on, and do the whole 9. But Howard students know what they are at howard for and realize that their studies come first. Howard is selective. It's known as the black Harvard. They only want the brightest students who will be leaders in corporate america. Hands down I would say go to Howard(lol) but the decision of course is up to you. If you have anymore specific questions just let me know.
Well I have been to both Hampton and Howard so I can really answer your questions. I went to Hampton to take summer classes in the summer of 2006. Hampton has a beautiful campus which is surrounded by water hence the name "Your Home by the Sea." The dorms are really old and are not kept up at all. As a freshman you will have to deal with community bathrooms which you might not like. The atmosphere is safe, but if you're a big city person as myself you will not like the area. Hampton, VA is a very small city yet everything is far apart that's why most upperclassmen bring their cars. The teachers I had were pretty good for the most part. They knew what they were talking about and had good methods of teaching. As for night life goes you will have to make fun for yourself since most of the clubs are 21 and up and a lot of parties usually aren't thrown unless they are house parties which you can find if you know the right group of people. Most people go to va beach on the weekends. I decided not to attend hampton because of the small city, the dorms, and I just wasn't satisfied with my summer experience.

School of C is the place to be!
Oh pardon me...I meant "The John H. Johnson School of Communications" Cook is pretty small, but it certainly isn't a bad dorm. It's usually referred to as the "atheletic dorm", because that is where most of the atheletes at HU stay (it's co-ed). One of the benefits is that it's at a pretty neutral location on campus, so you can wake up 10 mins before class and be alright lol. Here's a link to some info and a virtual tour...
