Lets Talk: black women and music videos Posted on 05-26-2004
Afro-American

while im watching mtv and drugged on southern iced tea...yes, has anyone else noticed this trend black artist's music video: usually with the main video girl aka the romantic interest/wifey type not EVEN being black but of another color...example, usher's burn, lenny kravitz's videos, boyz to men and their late videos, G-UNIT, and if we are wifey we have to have long straight hair and be light skinned/mixed(no offense to yall), god forbid if they are darker skin or have natural hair or BOTH unless its a reggae video  ...but if any video has black chicks usually they are the skanky ones or the ones just to mess around with anyways :? white artist's videos: well whoopty doo, black-women are beautiful, we are dancing in the clubs with *shock* CLOTHES ON!!, we are able to dance with the likes of justin timberlake without being hoeish and flashing our t&a, we are in rock videos rocking it out with the rest of them, and another shocker, we are all shades and colors and hair types, and thought of as exotic creatures..and as i type this the band "jet" has a new video with a black girl in the club with a huge curly fro rocking out in a classy way...is it just me?? :? i know this has been said before, but Im it just seems more obvious now

If you look at who's directing the video's its pretty much the same music directors. Dave Meyers, Hype Williams, and Lil X... if you ever watch the shows where they are behind the scenes when they make the video you'll see that they tend to favor the "exotic" looking girls because its whats "in" (despite the fact that they delegate whats in, most artist really don't choose or care  ). I had a lot a respect for the frontin video because pharrell had that FINE girl next door lookin dark skin honey who was so FINE (did i say that already). Personally, i feel the "exotic" looking girls are played out (never really liked it), and I'd like to see more videos with us in a positive light.

I'm feeling you on this. I was guessing since Chili was brown skinned Usher didn't want a brown skinned girl playing the lead. But the girl he choses was damn near white. Playing it safe huh? In the video all the chiks got long hair...ALL OF THEM... has anyone noticed that? They don't even put a variety of hair styes in them. They basically all have long hair. That's crazy. My hairs down there and everything because I take care of it...but once upon a time it wasn't. I know that we all don't have long hair becasue we as women like a variety of styles. So if you're gonna try to capture a beautiful woman should she capture the variety of the black woman (but hey we forgot..they rarely put black chicks in the videos now a day light or dark)

Yeah i was thinking the same thing about the skin tones. I also believe that if you put someone white, or close to white it has more potential for making it high on the "TRL countdown" aka tha white spotlight. Just like Andre's song "Hey Yawl" they love it!!

I think you make a good point Shoya..but I can think of some pretty dark skin women who have been the leading ladies in videos...One that comes to mind is the girl who cheats on Mario Winans in the I Dont Wanna Know video...she is also the main love interest in the LL Cool J Luv U Better video..she is dark skin...but yea, she does have long pretty hair :?. But I believe there may be a few others...but you do make a valid point that MOST of the leading ladies are lite skinned with pretty hair, etc...

I am definately with you there.... it's been bothering me a lot lately...like i mean the "perfect" black girl that every man is suppose to want...isn't black at all...they damn near white...i mean yeah i don't mind if i see that ere'once in a while in a video...all shades are beautiful...but when its the re-oo-cur-rin theme...its annoys the hell outta me...black directors need to step it up...raise the bar...i mean come on...look at the title it is hanging over us black women....

Yeah I was about to say: What Black women? Snoop really made me upset with Beatiful and you put all these light chicks with long flowing hair in your video. What message is he sending to young Black females and to his daughter? These hip hop artist are the ones who choose these girls and I am glad Murphy Lee kept it real in his making of his video and said that a lot of these video feature light skin chicks.
