DUMB STUDENTS AT HBCUs Posted on 11-10-2004
Jugger

I have spent a healthy amount of time at hbcus to understand that most of the students are ignorant. the masses are superficially educated - trained to lust for that which is baseless! students are so apathetic to the politic war that is being waged; they've allowed themselves to be categorized as "adamant democrats", lost in a world devoid of goals. the vote or die campaign was a PERFECT example. black students, collectively, INACTIVE AND INEFFECTIVE. also... homecoming has been transformed into a hip hop/sexual melee that sullies the ground of some of the greatest scholars the world has ever known. (when trick daddy boisteriously repeats the words "Kill that baby, that baby ain't mine" in front of a crowd of women, and men, on the same Yard that struggled to better the condition of blacks, something has gone terribly wrong!) END BLACK APATHY...GET INVOLVED...SERIOUSLY....DEMAND CHANGE!!!! I AM WILLING TO SAY THAT BLACK COLLEGES ARE MADE UP PRIMARILY OF FUTURE UNCLE TOMS. **DISCLAIMER** IM NOT A RACIST

Look CD, maybe you should try and put one out because nobody would listen to you otherwise. You are just another miseducated black man whining about your mistreatment not realizing that your inability to better yourself is your own fault. And what blessings are these? Poverty? The inability to understand their own plight? Shut the F*ck Up. Moron.

It takes alot of ignorance and self-hate to write such a post as this. What makes me a moron? If I am a miseducated black man, What are you, after writing posts such as that? Who said I was in poverty? And if I was in poverty, what would that matter to you? What plight do I need to understand? The same plight you understood? You know, it takes alot of Education to come on a college site, and go by a name such as "sexydaddybryant." I just now began to realize that I am wasting my time posting over a ludicrous comment, so I will choose to leave you with this statement: "IF YOU DO NOT HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY IT AT ALL." Let me tell you ahead of time that I am NOT mad at you; I have as much respect for you as God wants me to have for you. However, just for me and the rest of the college students on here, Can you AT LEAST be more proper and mature, if you do not plan to end personal attacks? I did not start a personal attack; I stood up for what I believed in, and that was that! "When a man angers you, he conquers you." PLEASE do not get angry. CD

First of all, DON'T YOU EVER come onto a Black website calling college students "DUMB." I don't care WHAT they do, you watch the way you speak to us as a people. This is potentially the number 1 problem that I have when I am trying to get along with whites. Secondly, If they are ignorant college students, then YOU are an ignorant HBCU Connect member, because you just ignored the rules! Before you go off taking shots at our HBCUs and our HBCU students, learn who we are, and where we came from. God blesses our institutions in a way that he will NEVER bless those other schools. We don't need billions of dollars in order to be considered a great institution. Also, keep in mind that HBCUs have produced QUALITY people - thank you very much. Before you go off trying to accuse black college students of being ignorant, LEARN THE FACTS MAN! There are white students in universities who act just as bad, so don't even try that. CD

You know what....he's made ALOT of good points, and yet y'all bash him. 1) You say go to the gospel concerts, the rallys, and all that that. When push comes to shove, which will be packed more? What will have a longer-lasting effect on those the student population? 2) My hats off to the guy who started this topic. If Cosby himself got on here, and said the exact same words, would y'all be so quick o react? So why turn on him just cuz he's white. Truth be told, I blame BET for the majority of that crap young black minds are exposed to. You know why? Cuz what do you see when you turn on BET 85% of the programming time.......that crap. 3) Hey, it's his OPINION.....he has a right to it. Don't get angry, just get over it!

With the words that were used to describe what he said, I would consider that more as disrespectful, as I would acceptable. We are in a world and a generation where the economy is down, prisons and jails are FULL of our brothas and sistahs, and only the STRONG are surviving. The LAST thing we need is someone telling us who we are and what we are. If he feels that students in HBCUs are dumb, then that is how he feels. I have no control over that. However, keep your comments to yourself! A TRUE college student would have sense enough to know that. And exactly what was the purpose for starting up a thread like this? The problem with us is our mindsets are too negative, and we inflict that upon each other. If someone is not as smart and educated as you are, Absolutely WHAT reason do you have to bash them? I have a saying: "One's weakness can be another's strength; just as one's strength can be another's weakness." Meaning, your strength may be the other person's weakness; just as the other person's weakness may be the other person's strength. Not every one gets the same opportunities. One student may not be HIGHLY intelligent, but God STILL loves them, and has a purpose for them. He says "Love your neighbor as you love yourself." What is so hard about doing that? If you don't love your neighbor, then you don't love yourself. Common courtesy. Not every one is on the same level as every one. How hard is it to have respect for someone as a human being? You have to give respect to get respect, and I did not witness any respect out of this thread starter. On another note- If BILL COSBY said the same exact words, I would give him the SAME EXACT RESPONSE! He dropped out of High School and I don't even think he even attended an HBCU. Besides, the man was just accused of getting into an encounter with a female. Leave him out of it. I don't turn on anyone because they are white. I was born, raised, and grew up in ALL white environments, and I see what I see. When I see injustice, for better or for worse, I react to it. Most of the injustice that I have seen WAS because of the color of the skin, so I do not eliminate saying that something was done due to racism. Although, keep in mind that I do not cry "racism" all the time. Racism does not bother me; oppression does, and oppression is so easy to see, it is not even funny. I don't watch BET. I have not paid attention to BET in almost a year. Yet I do agree that something must be done to put an end to that madness. That might be the ONLY thing that we agree on. By the way, if you blame BET, what do you plan to do about it? I myself have bigger and better things to do than sit around and point fingers at people and programs. If you witness something that does not belong on TV, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT? Don't just talk about; BE ABOUT IT! I will wait for his purpose for creating this thread, and what he was looking to accomplish by creating this thread BEFORE I begin to give kudos. Is this individual part of the PROBLEM or part of the SOLUTION? CD

The poverty I was talking about was in response to what you said about the "blessings" of HBCUs.

I just started thinking about that: "DUMB STUDENTS AT HBCUs" Just because they are not A+ smart makes them Dumb? That is one of the most ignorant ways to express an opinion......and in public? It appears colleges don't teach well enough, which is the reason students act like this. Anyways, If HBCUs are in poverty, then I guess this puts YOU in poverty -given that you attend one? Martin Luther King attended an HBCU - was he dumb and poor? Mary McLeod Bethune attended an HBCU - was she dumb and poor? Oprah Winfrey attended an HBCU - was she dumb and poor? A. Philip Randolph attended an HBCU - was he dumb and poor? Willie E. Gary attended an HBCU - was he dumb and poor? And the list can go on and on. Did you know that God blesses the poor more than he blesses the rich? As a matter of fact, all these people had less than we have at our age, and they managed to make it! However, I guarantee you they did not call their HBCus "dumb" and then agree on it. Some of these people did some things that you NEVER think about doing. And did they need money to do it? I don't think so. Live and learn. CD

Hello College Folks! I am the mom of an incredible HBCU college kid so, I am going to take a different direction. Much that has been posted is simply mean. I opened this thread because I thought it was "tongue-in-cheek". My bad. While this thread is only 6 months old the words, thoughts and displaced passion will be with us for many decades to come. That's life. My take on some of the writing is simple: This is the internet and so many people come to message boards to insult, enrage and distract. Stay focused on the real beauty: Historical Black Colleges and Universities are not for everybody...this is a good thing. While the original poster and a more recent poster are in deep pain do not let that give you more pause than its worth. Prayer and patience are in order. "Ignorant, Miseducated, Uncle Toms, Dumb, BET, Compton, Stanford, Homecoming and The Yard" are all words that some folks will mis-use to pull you into their funk. Outside of the internet folks will go even further. Be strong and know that you are being targeted by those who do not wish you well. So, are their some "dumb" folks( Presidents, Deans, Professors, Students, Office Workers, Janitors, Security, Trustees, etc.) at HBCU's, the Ivy League Colleges/Universities, the various Liberal Arts Colleges/Universities, the Community Colleges? Of course! Their are also some "dumb" folks that have never been to nor plan to go to any college. I responded to this thread because today some folks of all races, religions, ethnicities, incomes, ages, education, genders, professions, social status, etc. are threatened by the numbers of kids of all races, incomes, etc. who are selecting HBCU's. Check the facts by contacting any HBCU admissions office and request the demographic spread for Fall 2005 applicants. Many HBCU's can not and do not accept all of the very qualified applicants because of the demand. If you want to do some "fast" research then go to the website for The Journal of Blacks in Higher Education. They house this data and lots more for those seeking facts and knowledge about students and more at the HBCU's. Still, with all the validation that HBCU's have, you will always have "haters" out there. To wrap this up, I want to tell you that I have a "friend" who responded to my son's acceptances at HBCU's with utter disdain. She said: "... well, I am sure that you are not going to let him waste his excellent and very expensive high school education at one of those black schools right?" My reply to her was calm and simple. I said: " I plan to send him to the college or university that will not make him a "dumb", racist, ignorant bigot like you..." She is black. She is a black Greek. She is in black social and civic organizations and clubs. She is married to a black man and her kids are black. You see ignorance about HBCU students can come from those close to you and from those whom you will (thankfully) never have the "pleasure" of meeting.

...................So as a proud HBCU parent, you would agree that HBCU's produce successful people?

...Absolutely!!!!! The HBCU student also effects SO many other people. Our son is home for the summer and so many HBCU "haters" ask him "dumb" questions about his school, the professors, the other students and so on. He, being an intelligent, polite and funny young man answers them in a way that I never could. WOW, "successful people" is an understatement ( You are forgiven  ). You simply get much more out of an HBCU than a great education which can lead to success. You get the moxie to really stand up for yourself and others because your HBCU legacy dictates nothing less. Successful people...are happy, nice, proud, intelligent, formally educated or street smart, giving, kind, prayful, forgiving and peaceful. Thats my short list. I know some say success is money, fame, fortune, women, men, cars, kids, title, labels, addresses etc...those are cool but the real successful people have an abundance of the first category which deals with one's character.
