Job Description
LPN-RRTP-Mental Health, GS-0210-3/4/5/6

The within this organization functions as a nursing team member under the direction and guidance of the Registered Nurse (RN) or Provider. He/she is responsible for delivering safe physical and emotional care to Veterans, in a variety of settings, while enhancing technical skills and nursing knowledge. The LPN GS 6 will perform at an advanced level. He/she is responsible for direct patient care activities and provider practice support under minimal supervision by the registered nurse RN or Provider. Considers lifespan issues and provides care to young adults through geriatric patients, inclusive of all gender designations and needs. Completes patient focused assessments (Does not conduct Neuro checks, CIWAs or COWS). Recognizes signs and symptoms of withdrawal. Completes clinical reminders and reports of data findings to the clinician, provider or RN. Administers medications and injections to patients accurately, timely, and according to facility policy. Keeps patient care areas and medication room clean and free of clutter. Restocks supplies as needed, anticipating work flow. Maintains all equipment and the competencies needed for skill proficiency. Reviews and maintains room and refrigerator temperatures as assigned. Collects urine, uses breathalyzer and other point of care specimen collection as ordered. Labels and stores lab specimens appropriately. Initiates and evaluates Veterans participation in community groups and community meetings. Participates in treatment team meetings. Completes documentation accurately, timely and completely addressing Veterans complaints and care provided. Collaborates with team members to provide seamless care to the Veteran. Mentors new LPN's and other new employees to the LPN duties. Participates in unit committees as directed. Mentors new LPN's and other new employees as needed.

Work Schedule: Day /Night with rotating weekends and holidays

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Are you a graduate of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing at the time the program was completed by the applicant? Health care education in the military service or training in the military service which is accepted by the licensing body in the jurisdiction in which the individual is licensed as qualifying for full LPN/LVN licensure will be accepted as meeting the education requirements for VHA employment. Are graduated of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and/or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing.
  • Do you possess a current, full and unrestricted licensure as a practical/vocational nurse in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth (i.e. Puerto Rico) of the U.S. or in the District of Columbia?
  • Licensed practical or vocational nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in [both] spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). Are you proficient in spoken and written English?
Grade Determinations:
GS 3. Are you a graduate of a school of practical or vocational nursing approved by the appropriate State [ ] agency and/or [accredited by] the National League for Nursing [Accrediting Commission (NLNAC)] at the time the program was completed with a full active unrestricted licensure in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or District of Columbia?
GS 4. Do you possess six months of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN; or graduated from an approved school and possess one year of experience that involved nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other supervised medical, nursing, or patient care facility that provided a practical knowledge of human body structure and sterile techniques and procedures; or graduated from an approved school of at least 24 months duration?
GS 5. Do you possess one year of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN at the GS-4 level or equivalent?
GS 6. Do you possess one year of qualifying experience as an LPN or LVN at the GS-5 level or equivalent, fully meeting all performance requirements for the GS-5 LPN/LVN?
