Job Description
Maintenance Mechanic/Driver


The incumbent of this position functions as an integral part of the Tallahassee Health Care Center (THCC) and Perry Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) overall maintenance. He/she is the clinic's representative for Facility Management Service and as such, the service's source of information and expertise on engineering operations and facility maintenance matters.
  • Assists in the planning and development of procedures to enable the clinic to carry out its mission in a safe and pleasant environment for our customers and employees
  • Performs minor construction and repair on existing structures
  • Assists electricians by performing the simpler and more routine duties of the electrical trade
  • Assists mechanics by performing the simpler and more routine duties of the sheet metal trade
  • Performs minor repairs on furniture items
  • Coordinates work with Facility Management Services and Building lessor's facility maintenance representatives to ensure mission success and sustain the environment of care.
  • Uses and maintains bench stock levels and parts, materials, tools and equipment of prescribed levels
  • Maintains records and documents actions
  • Operates VA vehicles to transport patients as required
  • Provides preventive maintenance of the THCC vehicles
  • Must maintain a valid driver's license and may be required to drive to any of the facilities within the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health Care System in support of the needs of the clinic and our patients
  • Carries out other duties as assigned, by the Chief Medical Officer, Operations Officer and Assistant Operations Officer.

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Position uses hand and power tools and equipment that may require standing and holding tools in uncomfortable positions for extended periods. The work requires considerable bending, kneeling, climbing and stooping. On site work requires strenuous physical exertion when handling heavy and bulky materials. Work typically requires crawling and climbing on ladders, scaffolding, platforms and rooftops. Frequently lifts and carries material and equipment that weigh up to 75 pounds with no assistance and occasionally lifts or moves heavier items with the assistance of lifting devices or other workers. Painting may be done at considerable heights (such as tall buildings) and may require the position to be strapped into swing stages. The work is done inside and outside and is usually dirty, dusty and greasy with spray and fumes often present. May work in confined areas such as crawl spaces and attics. Exposed to such hazards as moderate or high noise levels from operating machinery, sawdust in the air, glue fumes and hazards associated with woodworking and related power equipment. the position is sometimes required to make repairs and installations outside in all types of weather. The position is frequently exposed to the possibility of cuts, bruises, scrapes, contusion, burns and infections. may occasionally be exposed to the possibility of broken bones. Protective equipment and clothing such as safety shows, earplugs, safety glasses or sun glasses, gloves, rain gear, hard hats, coveralls, respirators and other protective gear are required.
