Job Description
Student Trainee

The Student will receive varied assignments designed to provide on-the-job training and experience in the activities conducted within the Aleda E. Lutz VA Medical Center as they relate to Healthcare Administration, The Joint Commission and the overall performance improvement of the organization. Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Assisting higher level employees and other staff members in establishing an effective management system for planning and monitoring activities conducted by the assigned program or administrative staff.
  • Designs charts, graphs, and other narrative information for management or program analysis reports from materials provided by higher level employees.
  • Assists higher level employees and other staff members in performing analytical and technical work; assist in collecting and analyzing clinical outcomes data; gathers, sorts and compiles patient education materials; provide support for patient scheduling and data collection; identify potential and actual problems and probable causes of system operations; research special issues and gather information; report findings for the full scope of a program or function or identify information for an aspect or aspects of a program or function.
  • The Student will perform a variety of clerical or technical support duties involving use of computerized office applications and data bases, including use of the foodservice and nutrition management software system.

Work schedule: Between 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM (20 hours per week, Monday through Friday, hours are negotiable based on student's class schedule, as agreed upon by the service supervisor)

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides manager's a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. This opportunity is open to current degree or certificate seeking students at a qualifying educational institution OR to students that have been admitted/accepted for enrollment at a qualifying education institution. You will be required to provide documentation to support your eligibility.

NOTE: You must maintain student eligibility and enrollment for the duration of the internship. If you cannot, you are ineligible for this program. Please review the "REQUIREMENTS" section of this vacancy announcement to ensure that you qualify for this internship.

To be eligible for this internship ALL of the following requirements must be met:

1. Be a U.S. Citizen;
2. Be at least 16 years of age;
3. Enrolled or accepted for enrollment in degree or certificate program at a qualifying educational institution on a full or half-time basis;
4. If enrolled, you must be in good academic standing (At least a 2.0 GPA);
5. Provide current transcript or proof of enrollment/acceptance;
6. Provide a detailed resume showing your eligibility for this position (please include the month and year for all dates);
7. Successfully complete a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment;
8. Use of Direct Deposit required;
9. Required to sign a Pathways Participant Agreement (this will be signed once student is onboard); and
10. All requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.

Education: Completion of 2 full academic years of post-high school study or an associate's degree.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work.
