Job Description
Transportation Assistant

As a VTS Transportation Assistant you will perform duties and assignments that include (but are not limited to):

  • Assist veterans in coordinating transportation through numerous avenues, including but not limited to VTS, beneficiary travel, special mode, DAV, county services, and VA vans.
  • Provides excellent customer service to internal and external customers of the VA Medical Center.Always conducts business in a professional manner that is timely and courteous.
  • Enters pertinent information into tracking systems. Receives workload information. Maintains data to track milestones, program performance, trends, and progress.
  • Responsible for collecting, compiling, and tracking data and statistical information in support of VTS.
  • Performs analysis of data and generates a variety of reports.Reviews reports to ensure data is accurate and complete.
  • Will assist in the Eligibility and Enrollment (Travel) departments performing various administrative duties, as assigned.Assist veterans with their travel eligibility and mileage reimbursement. Processes ambulance claims and assists with budgetary obligations and systems to pay beneficiary claims.
  • Works daily with all levels of the organization and with Veterans and their representatives.
  • Must be a strong communicator both verbally and in written documents.
  • Creates SOPs and makes policy recommendations.
  • Must be able to work independently with multiple tasks at the same time. Ability to build strong working relationships across the health care system.
  • Excellent computer skills; send/receive emails, create/edit Word and Excel documents, and access various other systems to process travel claims.



Work Schedule: Monday through Friday 9:30am to 6:00pm

Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-06 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-05. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

You may qualify based on your experience as described below:

  • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Being flexible in order to undertake a variety of miscellaneous administrative duties; maintaining patient confidentiality; employee makes ongoing adjustments in prioritizing work; timeliness, accuracy, and organizational skills are essential to this position; communication skills are required to properly coordinate unit activities and follow up with clinical and administrative team members; regularly assists coA, workers as needs arise; participates in special work projects assigned by supervisor or designee.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements: Work is performed in an area responsible for treating patients with a wide variety of medical problems including psychiatric or substance abuse. Occasionally Veterans may be angry and potentially violent. The incumbent is frequently exposed to communicable diseases. Safety precautions are sometimes necessary. The work requires no special physical demands, but will require some physical effort such as standing, walking, bending, and sitting.

Work Environment: The work is normally performed in an office setting with occasional visits to clinic areas and other services. The work area typically is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated although the area can be congested. Must be able to work under adverse situations and function at an optimum level of concentration in an environment with frequent interruptions and many activities in progress simultaneously. The incumbent works directly with the public, clerical and professional staff of the Medical Center. The incumbent observes established safety standards and practices as defined in the current Medical Center policy. Incumbent occasionally will attend meetings and obligations at other locations.
