Job Description
Supervisory Dietitian

The Supervisory Dietitian performs duties including but not inclusive of:

  • Functions as a professional and technical advisor to clinical staff, other allied healthcare professionals, program directors and managers throughout the medical center/facility
  • Develops, and implements nutrition therapy programs
  • Develops and implements nutrition care protocols using principles of evidence-based practice to establish and/or improve nutrition care guidelines and evaluates the care given to patients to assure compliance with standards
  • Directs the provision of nutrition therapy by supervising the activities of clinical dietitians and dietetic technicians, which includes nutrition screening, assessment, monitoring and education
  • Recruits, interviews and recommends selection of new clinical staff
  • Serves along with the Chief/Assistant Chief as a mentor for Clinical Dietitians, dietetic interns, and the rest of the NFS staff on clinical nutrition providing leadership
  • Initiates individualized plan for continuous professional development
  • Coordinates the work assignments based on priorities, capabilities of the employee, selective considerations of the difficulty and requirement of the assignment
  • Develops performance standards and competency statements

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • The individual must have earned a bachelor's degree from a U.S. regionally accredited college or university or foreign equivalent and fulfilled each of the following criteria:
  • Completed a didactic program in dietetics accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), formerly known as the Commission on Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE).
  • Completed an ACEND accredited or approved supervised practice program. Supervised practice programs are post-baccalaureate degree programs that provide supervised practice experiences which meet the eligibility requirements and accreditation standards of ACEND, formally known as CADE. Completion of a coordinated program in dietetics fulfills the requirements of a supervised practice program. Time spent in a dietetic internship or supervised practice program does not qualify as creditable experience.
  • All applicants must be registered with the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) the credentialing branch of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics formerly known as the American Dietetic Association (ADA).
Experience: Completion of 1 year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Assignments: For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. A clinical nutrition manager serves as a supervisory dietitian, clinical nutrition expert, and consultant with primary responsibility for professional management support of clinical nutrition program activities. The clinical nutrition manager integrates clinical functions with other sections of NFS, other services and units within the medical center, hospital and community based clinics, and the local community. The individual assesses, plans, and evaluates the clinical nutrition program to ensure proper coordination between the delivery of clinical nutrition services and the overall delivery of health care. The clinical nutrition manager is responsible for ensuring compliance with internal and external regulatory authorities.

Physical Requirements: The work is somewhat sedentary but does require some walking, standing, bending and lifting. The incumbent must have adequate eyesight and hand dexterity to allow for reading and operating a computer terminal.
