Job Description
Cytotechnologist

In this position you will be responsible for all cytology procedures and examinations and provide a full range of cytology services and consultative opinions in support of the VA Medical Center and outpatient facilities.

The major duties are:
Planning and implementing administrative and technical functions for the cytology area;
Screening of cytologic preparations prepared from fine needle aspirates/biopsies, effusion fluids, and exfoliated gynecological samples for benign and malignant processes;
Performing microscopic screening of prepared specimens;
Coordinating specimen collection and preparation for complex procedures;
Participating in external quality assurance surveys;
Prepares cytotechnology duties, including preparation of surgical specimens for cytologic analysis;
Administers, evaluates, and monitors a quality control review system to determine accuracy of cytologic diagnoses and quality and appropriateness of cyto-preparatory techniques;
Maintains sufficient working levels of expendable and consumable supplies;
Trains technicians, medical students, physician residents and others in new or specialized laboratory techniques, instrumentation, organization of work, and safety regulations;
Performs other related duties as assigned.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a full four (4) year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of a cytotechnologist. (A transcript is required at the time of application.)

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement you must also meet one of the following minimum requirements:
Specialized Experience: You must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience that has equipped you with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of this Cytotechnologist position. This experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service and includes experience in a medical facility as a cytotechnologist performing cytology screenings under general supervision, preparing slides from fine needle aspirates/biopsies; performing cytologic examinations on human body fluids and other cytology samples; assisting collection and preparation for complex procedures; preparing specimens and applying reagents; verifying correct instrument operation; recording information; maintaining supplies. (This experience must be documented in your resume.) - or -

You may substitute specialized experience with education if you possess 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Master's degree or Master's or equivalent graduate degree that provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position. (A transcript is required at the time of application.) - or -

Combination of Education and Experience may also be qualifying if you possess equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education (above a Bachelor's degree) and qualifying specialized experience (as described above) to meet the total qualification requirements. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates.
