Job Description
Medical Support Assistant (MSA) Supervisor

Assignment at this level include, but may not be limited to;

  • Assigning work of subordinate staff which requires developing performance standards.
  • Resolving complex issues to include ensure that patient services are met.
  • Evaluating new products, equipment and systems in order to make recommendations for improved operations.
  • Identifying educational training needs.
  • Making decisions on employee selections.
  • Evaluating performance and taking disciplinary action when necessary.
  • Provides the technical and management guidance necessary to achieve the optimum use of the support service resources which require the application of highly specialized knowledge and skills.
  • Requires working independently basing decisions on applicable manuals, procedures, policies, and responsible judgement.
  • Gives advice, counsel, or instruction to employees on both work and administrative matters.
  • Analyzes current and future workforce requirements to determine competencies and skills needed.
Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Experience: Six months experience of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position; or
  • Education: One year above high school; or
  • Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying
    for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
GS-8 Supervisory Medical Support Assistant Minimum qualification:
  • Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.
    Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Candidates must demonstrate the KSAs below:
    1. Ability to provide the full range of administrative and supervisory duties which includes assignment of
    work, performance evaluations, selection of staff, and recommendation of awards and/or advancements.
    2. Ability to collaborate, communicate, and demonstrate customer service and interpersonal skills with all
    healthcare professionals to ensure quality/continuity of care and ensure compliance with established
    policies and regulations.
    3. Ability to provide briefings, orientations, staff development, and training.
    4. Ability to manage fiscal matters, forecast resource and equipment needs, and identify budget needs.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-8.
Physical Requirements: The work is basically sedentary; there is some walking when covering other clinics within the Hospital, retrieving mail, relaying pertinent information to staff. There is also minimal lifting/bending involved when handling supplies. The work may result in mental stress to the employee due to the nature of the work Involving families and patients with life threatening issues which sometimes results in death.
