Job Description
Medical and Health Student Trainee

The following is a brief description of duties for a Medical and Health Student Trainee in the Iowa City VA Laboratory.

  • Drawing blood from patients for requested laboratory tests, including special drawing techniques used for such tests as finger sticks, and plasma free hemoglobin.
  • Upon completion of drawing, incumbent routes specimens to the designated sections and initials all requests
The following additional duties are performed as assigned:
  • spinning and pouring off sera, hematology drawoffs
  • Setting up the bacteriology bench
  • Planting cultures.
Work Schedule: 12 Hours per week scheduled, Monday - Friday, between 7:30 and 4:30 pm

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled.

GS-2: To be eligible at the GS-2 level, you must have at least 3 months of general experience; or graduated from high school or equivalent.

General Experience: Is defined as progressively responsible clerical, clinical, office, or other work that indicates the ability to preform the duties of a student trainee . Examples of general experience include customer service experience or experience following safety procedures.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.
