Job Description
Physician (Clinical Director Gastroenterology)

We are recruiting for a physician to serves as the Clinical Director of the Gastroenterology Division at the Southern Arizona VA Health Care System located in the wonderful city of Tucson. The Tucson VA is the principal teaching affiliate with the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy; medical students, residents, and fellows rotate at the facility. Therefore, the selected candidate must also be eligible for an appointment with the University of Arizona. The Tucson VA is a high-complexity health care center providing a full range of clinical services including cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. It has been a flagship quality provider within the Veterans Administration and was a 2012 winner of the prestigious Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award.

As the Clinical Director of the Gastroenterology Division, strong leadership skills will be essential both in administration and patient clinical-care and where clinical care integrates quality of care and education. A track record of success in education and research is preferred.

There is an opportunity for the incoming Clinical Director to lead our advanced endoscopy program if that is the candidate's preference; excellent facilities and equipment are already in place.

The GI Clinical Director will direct the patient care within the Division, ensure appropriate coverage for patients, and provide specific guidelines for physician and nurse practitioner performance expectations. He/she will monitor staff and ensure all paperwork, education, training for providers are being met and oversee future recruitment. He/she will report to leadership of the Medicine Service Line (MSL) and will provide clinical care and planning in an interdisciplinary approach in collaboration with the Chief and Assistant Chief of MSL and other health care professionals. He/she must maintain current BLS Basic Life Support and ACLS certification at all times.

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Preferred Experience: BC/BE in Gastroenterology

Physical Requirements: Must be able to physically and mentally perform the duties in a hospital setting under normal and emergent conditions. Heavy lifting 45 lbs and over with assistive devices, heavy carrying of 45 lbs and over with assistive devices; reaching above shoulder; use of fingers, both hands required, walking or standing up to 6 hours per day; repeated bending up to 2-4 hours per day; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination; near vision correctable; hearing aid permitted.
