Job Description
Personal Effects Worker
Receives and stores supplies for indigent patients to facilitate convenience and ease of handling and protecting the items from damage and pilferage.
Maintains adequate stock levels of supplies to ensure being able to always meet the need of the indigent veteran patient.
Makes frequent rounds to the Admissions area and all nursing units to collect, inventory, and return to storage all patient personal items taken into custody during the previous tour of duty.
In event of discharge, transfer, death, etc., responsible for the proper release of patient valuable and personal effects and so noting in the file.
In the event of death, responsible for assembling and packing all personal effects and valuables of the deceased for release to the next of kin.
Marks patient's clothing for identification purposes with a marking machine.
Conducts semi-annual audits of the Patient Assistance Program and reports the results of the audits.
Completes and maintains various records associated with the Patient Assistance Program.
Maintains the patient's effects area in a neat and orderly fashion.

Must be skilled in the operation of electric typewriters and ADP equipment to accomplish the duties of the program.
Uses MS Word or comparable word processing software to execute several office automation functions.
Uses MS Excel or other comparable spreadsheet software to develop and change spreadsheets in order to graphically display data.
Must be able to follow complex oral and written instructions.
Must maintain confidentiality always.
Must demonstrate tact and diplomacy when dealing with patients, patient's families or friends, and staff.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT FOR THIS POSITION IS "Ability to do the work of the Personal Effects Worker Without More Than Normal Supervision. This experience must be documented on your resume or you will be found Ineligible. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the following Job Elements. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Must have the physical capability to remain on his/her feet for long periods of time. Must be able to stoop, bend, push, pull, reach and exercise normal body movements. Must have the physical strength and visual acuity to operate and control the equipment used in this activity. Must frequently lift and move objects weighing up to 50 pounds and of various sizes and shapes; may occasionally lift and move objects weighing over 50 pounds.

Working Conditions: May be exposed to disagreeable odors, dirt, bacteria, etc., and may be subjected to contgious diseases when handling patient's effects. Must wear personal protective equipment, i.e., gowns, gloves, when handlign patient effects for inventorying and marking. Usually works in a well heated, well lighted and well ventilated building. Must be safety conscious when performing the duties of the position.
