Job Description
Chief, Social Work Service

The Chief is responsible for defining the mission and vision of the Service, developing the scope of practice and or privileging packets for all social workers, designing a Social Work Service Plan of Care, and assuring implementation of quality improvement measures. The incumbent is responsible for developing, planning, clarifying, administering and managing Social Work Services for all areas of the Medical Center. The incumbent designates service priorities and objectives, ensures the supervision and evaluation of all social work staff. The Chief makes independent professional decisions and recommendations. The incumbent serves as the liaison to other Services, and to other facilities, VISN offices and VHA Central Office. The incumbent is responsible for advising management of specific clinical or administrative issues within Social Work Service and within the Medical Center. The position serves as a consultant, mentor, and advisor to subordinates, peers and administration.

S/He will provide technical and administrative supervision to Social Workers at the GS-11 and GS-12 levels who are organizationally assigned to various service lines and is responsible for the clinical professional practice of these Social Workers. Oversee the professional practice functions of Social Workers standards of practice. Develops and monitors compliance with Social Work practice standards and guidelines on documentation, workload, data entry, ethical practice and service delivery.

Develops and maintains extensive community relationships with public, private and voluntary agencies in the community with a goal of developing services to cover gaps in continuity of care of resources for veterans returning to, or being maintained in the community. Maintains cooperative relationships with Social Work Services at other VA stations to coordinate use of all pertinent VA resources that may be available. Maintains and updates information files on resources available in the community service and social and health needs of veterans.

Physical Demands: The work is sedentary in nature. Typically, the incumbent will sit to perform work functions, but there will be some walking, standing, reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching or carrying light items.

Must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
Must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website.
