Job Description
Physician (Anesthesiologist)

The Southern Arizona VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) is recruiting for full-time anesthesiologists to join our growing program. SAVAHCS is the principal teaching affiliate with the University of Arizona Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, and Pharmacy. Medical students, residents, and fellows rotate at our facility. Therefore, the selected candidate must also be eligible for Facility appointment with the Department of Anesthesiology of the University of Arizona. SAVAHCS is a tertiary care facility providing a full range of high complexity clinical services including cardiac surgery and neurosurgery. It has been a flagship quality provider within the VA and was a 2012 winner of the prestigious Robert W. Carey Performance Excellence Award.

We are seeking candidates who are board certified or board eligible in Anesthesiology. Subspecialty training or extensive experience in the following areas is preferred: General Surgery Oncology to include solid organs and intestinal extirpation/reconstruction. Experience with regional anesthesia and TEE is a plus. We do not perform OB, pediatrics, or level one trauma cases. The selectee will be responsible for overall anesthesia activities in the OR and offsite Anesthesia. Ability to work independently is a must. In addition, oversight of staff CRNAs and Anesthesia Residents, ability to take night call is also required. The selectee must also be American Heart Association BLS/ACLS certified.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, varying hours with some on call coverage.

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 lbs), light carrying (under 15 lbs), use of fingers, walking 4-8 hours, standing 4-8 hours, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability, working closely with others, working alone, and working with biohazardous materials.
