Housekeeping Aid

As a Housekeeping Aid in the Housekeeping Section of Environmental Management Services you will be under the supervision of a Housekeeping Aid Supervisor. You will be expected to perform a variety of environmental and protective maintenance tasks in assigned routes, and to perform related work as required. The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor provides specific and/or general instructions, and written assignments, procedures and schedules necessary for you to complete tasks in logical sequence within a specific period of time. Daily work is spot checked for compliance with established requirements. Only general supervision is required once you are familiar with the area assignments. You will accomplish duties by cleaning in assigned buildings and building areas.

Major duties of the position include, but are not limited to:cleaning and disinfecting assigned areas to maintain the facility in an aseptic, orderly, and attractive condition

  • cleaning assigned areas by washing furnishings including beds, toilets, shower rooms, fixtures, windows, ceilings, furniture, sinks, walls, fans, etc.
  • scours and polishes sinks, tubs, mirrors and similar equipment
  • replenishes supplies of soap, toilet paper, towels, tissues and other dispensable items
  • cleans and seals or refinishes floors and operates floor machines, vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, and other cleaning equipment
  • moves furniture items such as chairs, desks, file cabinets, and other articles to perform cleaning duties
  • gathers and disposes of trash, cleans waste baskets and large refuse containers and/or relines plastic bags
  • collects bags of soiled linen and transports them to soiled linen room
  • uses ladders and scaffolds to clean ceilings, walls, windows and high fixtures

Work schedule: 7a - 3:30p (M-F) OR 7a - 3:30p (Mon/Tues off OR Wed/Thu off) OR 3p - 11p (M-F)

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. The potential eligibles are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements: The screen-out element for this position is Ability to do the job of a Housekeeping Aid without more than normal supervision.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: Working from standing, sitting and squatting positions and pushing, pulling and reaching for lengthy periods of time is common. The incumbent frequently lifts or moves items weighing over 50 pounds i.e. bags of soiled linen, trash cans, office desks, filing cabinets, etc. The incumbent may utilize desk movers (skates), dollies and other similar equipment in moving heavy furniture, filing cabinets, supplies and equipment. Working conditions such as ventilation and environment are satisfactory. The incumbent will be exposed to dust, dirt, grease, cleaning solvents, detergents, waxes and other harsh and irritating cleaning agents.

Working Conditions: Usually works indoors in areas which normally have adequate heat, light, and ventilation's. Will be exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritations from strong cleaning solutions used in stripping floors, etc., as well as subject to cuts and bruises. Continually exposed to dust, dirt, and disagreeable odors, and is frequently exposed to organic material which may be contaminated and/or infectious and require special handling.
