Director of Education
Every year, Sing For Hope engages, educates, and enriches the lives of thousands of students through the arts. SFH’s arts education partnerships have steadily increased over the past decade, enabling SFH to offer an appealing menu of programming that reflects the social and cultural needs of the student community while boosting spirits and learning in important ways. Sing for Hope is looking for an innovative thinker in the field of education who understands how the arts can accomplish this mission. This position requires experience in identifying and securing funding through school contracts, government agencies, and private support, as well as a keen sense of current trends in arts education.
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Director of Education leads, coordinates, and administers all aspects of Sing for Hope’s ongoing education programs including planning, organizing, staffing, leading, managing, controlling, and evaluating program activities.
DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Program Planning and Expansion:
** Plans the delivery of all Sing for Hope education programs and related activities in accordance with the mission and goals of Sing for Hope.
** Works with Education Manager on program growth and expansion.
** With the Chief Operating Officer, develops an annual budget and operating plan to support education programs.
** Identifies and cultivates co-investment partnership prospects, crafting partnership proposals, and stewarding co-investment partnership relationships.
** Develops a program evaluation framework to assess the strengths of Sing for Hope education programs and to identify areas for improvement.
** Identifies funding opportunities for Sing for Hope education programs to ensure the continuous delivery of services and relays those opportunities to the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Development Officer.
** Ensures that education program activities operate within the framework of Sing for Hope’s organizational policies and procedures.
** Ensures that program activities comply with all relevant legal and professional standards.
** Develops forms and records to document program activities.
** In consultation with the Chief Operating Officer, recruits, interviews and selects well-qualified program staff and interns when needed.
** Implements the HR policies, procedures, and practices of the organization.
** Ensures that personnel files related to programs are properly maintained and kept confidential.
** Establishes and implements a performance management process for all education program staff and interns.
** Through research and professional development initiatives, develops useful expertise in the fields related to Sing for Hope programming and contributes this expertise to Sing for Hope’s development and marketing initiatives where needed.
** Ensures that all education program staff and interns receive an appropriate orientation to the organization and appropriate programs.
** Supervises education program staff, interns, and Artist Partners by providing direction, input, and feedback.
** Communicates with partners and other stakeholders to gain community support for the programs and to solicit input to improve the programs.
** Liaises with Director of Artist Engagement to ensure the most effective and efficient program delivery, sharing best practices wherever possible.
** Creates materials as needed for program activities.
** Tracks programs closely, collecting and analyzing impact metrics, and partner/donor stewardship information.
** Writes reports on the program for Sing for Hope management and for funders.
** Ensures that the programs operate within the approved budget.
** Monitors all budgeted program expenditures.
** Manages all program project funds according to established accounting policies and procedures.
** Ensures that all financial records for programs are up to date.
** Ensures financial reports and supporting documentation for funders are prepared as outlined in funding agreements.
** Provides required information to have invoices generated and submitted to funders according to the established timelines.
** Identifies and evaluates the risks associated with program activities and takes appropriate action to control the risks.
** Monitors the program activities on a regular basis and conducts an annual evaluation according to the program evaluation framework.
** Reports evaluation findings to the Chief Operating Officer and recommends changes to enhance programs, as appropriate.
** Updates and helps maintain the SFH Programming Manual & Archive documents for education programs to keep pace with program development, ensuring institutional memory as well continued “best in class / best practices” status of SFH programs.
** Acts as a primary education programming contributor to Sing for Hope’s marketing and communications materials, including drafting newsletter and web stories, contributing material to social media platforms, etc.
** Acts as the primary procurer, coordinator, and curator for photography and video related to programs.
** Coordinates Sing for Hope’s education programming, including ribbon-cutting ceremonies, follow-up school visits, student piano painting sessions, special events, Youth Corps, Youth Arts Intensives, and more in accordance with the mission and goals of Sing for Hope.
Qualifications & Requirements The preferred candidate will have:
** Bachelor’s degree in education, arts education, or a related field (advanced degree preferred).
** Strong belief in the importance of arts education.
** An entrepreneurial spirit.
** 7+ years experience in program, project, and team management in addition to classroom teaching experience
** Experience in developing, directing, and managing nonprofit programs in the health, social service, or arts sectors.
** Strong marketing and communication skills.
** Excellent interpersonal, networking, and writing skills, including experience with public presentations.
** Capacity to oversee data collection and analysis efforts.
** Experience using data to make programmatic decisions.
** Experience with New York City public school system and/or non-profit sector.
** DOE fingerprinting and background clearances.
