Utilities Building Maintenance Specialist
Job Summary: Serves as a lead worker in the buildings maintenance crew; plans, schedules and performs a broad range of maintenance and construction duties on buildings, grounds and equipment found in water and wastewater facilities. Performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:

1. Serves as lead worker in the buildings maintenance crew
2. Coordinates and performs light construction, repairs and maintenance to buildings, grounds and structures used to provide water and wastewater service; to include but not limited to carpentry, roofing, framing, electrical and plumbing
3. Performs a variety of grounds maintenance duties (clearing ditches and fence lines, cutting grass, edging, lawn restoration, etc.)
4. Develops material lists , obtains pricing and creates purchase requests as needed to complete projects
5. Monitors/oversees work of various supply or service contractors
6. Cleans, prepares, and applies protective coatings to wood, metal, concrete, or other surfaces; including buildings, floors and water storage tanks
7. Utilizes computer skills to generate and close work orders as needed to track job status
8. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to gain working knowledge of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission policies and procedures
2. Ability to act as a representative of St. Mary’s County Metropolitan Commission to the public
3. Expert knowledge of relevant construction, maintenance and repair practices and procedures as they relate to building and grounds maintenance; (construction, electrical, plumbing and mechanical)
4. Knowledge of safety regulations and established procedures for operating, repairing, removing and installing equipment/materials as well as for ensuring safety
5. Ability to effectively communicate with other staff members and the public
6. Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records; (job estimates, material pricing and purchasing)
7. Ability to wear appropriate PPE for chemical protection, including respiratory gear; must successfully pass a pulmonary function test

Education and Experience:

1. HS Diploma or GED
2. One to two years of job related experience
3. Or equivalent technical training, education, and/or experience
4. Valid Maryland Drivers license

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work requires occasional strenuous effort. For example handling of heavy tools, equipment, or materials of 30 to 60 pounds or more.

Work environment involves high risks with exposure to potentially dangerous situations or unusual environmental stress which require a range of safety and other precautions, e.g., aggressive human behavior, extreme outdoor weather conditions, confined work space, or similar situations where conditions cannot be controlled.
