The End of an Era (2567 hits)
One thing striking about the Obama victory is the excitement that it generated not just here in the United States, but worldwide.

I saw crowds celebrating in Kenya, Paris, and the UK as if Obama was their head of state. Financial markets around the world rallied on news of the Obama victory. He hasn't even set foot inside the White House yet, and change is already in progress.

All of this isn't about Obama, it's about what we stand for as a nation.

This momentous event signifies the end of an era for the US. It represents the end of a government that allows its own citizens to suffer. It represents the end of foreign policy that thumbs its nose at our friends, and continually provokes our enemies. It represents an economy that will encourage hard work and creativity, but will not reward unethical behavior.

It's been many years since we have had a leader that commands respect through vision and character. McCain could also easily fit that role, but I believe this time in our history was destined for Barack Obama. There is a natural connection between his ethics, his leadership style, and his background to the challenges we'll face over the next four years.

We need a diplomat in office, and there is nobody more qualified for this role. This is a Black man who convinced White Americans that he is not here to be president of Blacks, but rather president of the United States. A Democrat who respects the rights and values of all our citizens, both liberal and conservative.

Obama will force the world to look at African Americans beyond the landscape of sports, entertainment, and social problems. We are successful, educated, capable leaders, and we do not need charity to become successful... we are more than able to achieve success through our own merits.

We will truly have an America that is prosperous at home, and respected in the world. The end of an era.
