HOW THE LADIES ARE TAKING CHARGE OF HEALTHCARE REFORM (1971 hits)

Hi Ladies,

Did you know that minority women are fast becoming the MAJORITY? That's why it is very important that we stay involved in directing the future of healthcare in the US! WE keep the country working and it is time to let Congress know we need healthcare reform (See, http://www.womenofcolorunited.net/learn-more-facts/).

So, thank you to all the sistahs who joined the White House talk on last Tuesday. However, we cannot stop there! We must join forces with the Black Women's Imperative and Women of Color on Tuesday October 27, 2009, as we make calls to Congress to campaign for the passage of healthcare reform. We must, must NOT stop until this Healthcare Bill is passed!!

Now, many of us are a little shy about the idea of calling Congress. We might feel a tinge of intimidation, but guess what, YOU can do it! YOU can become the best advocate for change for YOUR family. Commit to taking 10 minutes out of your day on Tuesday, October 27, 2009, and follow these easy 1-2-3 steps to contact YOUR Congresspersons and House of Representative and urge him or her to vote for healthcare reform. Did you know you have 2 Congresspersons and 1 House of Representative?

First, let me tell you why making that call on Tuesday is very, very important. It is a National Call day for women across the country. So, tell your sisters, cousins, friends, aunts, mother/grandmother, etc. to make the call, too. College Students, YOU can develop strong advocate skills to help you land a job. That's right, this will be very impressive on your resume for community service. (WOW!) In one single day, we can have a tremendously powerful voice that Congress will hear loud and clear. Again, ringing phones in Congress get quick attention! Ringing phones are like a march on Washington 21st-century style and you do NOT have to take the whole day off. It's toll free and you can use your cell phone. Smile.

Ok, here are the quick steps to participate on National Call Day for the ladies.

1) Dial 1-877-264-4226 and give the Operator your ZIP Code.

2) You will be connected to the Staff Person for your Congresspersons and House of Representative. Briefly tell each Staff Person the following (or a summary of this):

My name is ____________, and I am calling today to ask you to support healthcare reform.

I work hard raising __ children and I need healthcare reform for my family. As a woman of color, I know how insurance companies are failing US. More people in my community lack affordable health insurance. We struggle with high blood pressure, sugar diabetes, Sickle Cell Anemia, Lupus, breast cancer and other pre-existing and chronic conditions. We spend more of our income than others on healthcare we cannot afford or we are forced to do without health insurance!

We have to use emergency rooms because we can't afford primary care doctors.

[If you would like, insert your own experience with illness that you could not afford!]

Please pass a healthcare reform bill that will work for US women of color.

Thank you for your time.

Ok, sistahs. That is the message that we must unite and deliver to Congress on Tuesday, October 27, 2009. I have to make a special plea for YOU to please take 10 minutes to make this call on Tuesday! Plus, calling is more experience for you to be the best advocate the US has seen in the minority population - we will NOT be complacent anymore and watch health insurance companies get filthy rich at our expense!

3) One last thing, if you have not already done so, please visit Women of Color United at www.womenofcolorunited.net and subscribe.

So, are you ready to advocate on Tuesday, October 27, 2009? Let me know how it feels to be a part of history making change. (Ralph Nader, move over ...)

Sen. Majority leader Harry Reid has almost lined up 60 votes in the senate for a bill with a public option. Yet Obama is pushing back on that, demanding a trigger instead, just to keep the vote of Olympia Snowe. A trigger effectively means substantive health care reform is dead.

Why is this, and what is your position vis a vis the latest political developments?
