Public Law 92 142 -- It Does Work Friday, January 22, 2010 8:04 AM (3538 hits)

Today, I had a wonderful conversation with a parent who was looking for educational resource support for her two children (one in elementary and the other one in high school). Within the conversation, I educated the parent on "Public Law 92-142, which states:

Congress enacted the Education for All Handicapped Children Act (Public Law 94-142), in 1975, to support states and localities in protecting the rights of, meeting the individual needs of, and improving the results for Hector and other infants, toddlers, children, and youth with disabilities and their families. This landmark law, whose 25th Anniversary we celebrate this year, is currently enacted as the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as amended in 1997.

This is one of the best laws for supporting students with special needs, but yet one of the least known laws in the African American community. I used Public Law 92 142 to assist all three of my children who had speech problems. My children all got help while they were 3 years old and completed the support by the 2nd grade and the 3rd grade for the last child. The support from the law allowed them to grow academically and built up their gifts and talents.

I try to push this law, Public Law 92 142 to as many people that will listen. In order to prepare students you must help them to improve any handicaps that may stop their growth or potentials. The Law also doesn’t care about your income and it is offer to everyone.

When you see a child that is having speech problems at a pre-school level take the time to recommend that he or she get tested so that they can get the help at a younger age to allow them to solve their problems before they get into elementary school or higher.
In talking with the parent today, she didn't know about the law, but does plan on pursuing it further for her kids. In the end, it only takes a moment to change a life.
