Are HBCU necessary?
|
Posted By: Norval Henry on February 26, 2010 People of African descent were by law unable to enroll in American colleges and universities In the south it was unlawful to teach slaves to read prior to the civil war. Wilberforce University was established in 1856 in Ohio by the AME church. Its mission was to educate the descendants of Africa in America. This institution later evolved into the first publicly funded HBCU, Central State University in 1887. Wilberforce is currently a private institution. The current ecomonic recession, some alledge depression in black America, is affecting state funding of education institutions. Are historically Black Colleges and Universities essential? The attached private reseach survey maybe important in determining whether it is financially desirable to maintain publically funding of separate HBCU. Please provide your input. The resulting report will be posted here. You can copy&paste the survey and email to henry1n@cmich.edu If you enjoyed this article, Join HBCU CONNECT today for similar content and opportunities via email! |
