New Dorm Proposal at Benedict Faces Challenges

Posted By: autumn cade on July 06, 2010 Outcry from neighbors and building code requirements are just two of the obstacles faced by Benedict College and its efforts to expand student housing to an off-campus facility formerly used as a hotel. The Richland County Planning Commission will hear the both sides of the issue at a rezoning meeting this Thursday afternoon to determine if the college can renovate and utilize the building for undergraduate dorm living. From the State: As it stands, the property at 1539 Horseshoe Drive would not qualify because it’s too far from Benedict’s campus, on Harden Street. County law requires dorms to be within a half-mile of a main campus. Nathaniel Roberson, a lawyer who lives in Springwood Lake, said residents are concerned about traffic, congestion and noise. He said the freewheeling lifestyle of college students wouldn’t fit the neighborhood. “This community, the average age is probably between 62 and 65 years of age,” Roberson said. “These people have earned the right to have a quiet, peaceful enjoyment of their senior years.” The college does not own the hotel, he said. The facility is located seven miles away from the Benedict campus. Benedict officials, who have been lobbying the Council for the rezoning, were not available for comment at press time. http://www.hbcudigest.com/2010/07/new-dorm...
