Howard Plans Research Park Expansion Into Prince George’s County
|
Posted By: autumn cade on July 06, 2010 Despite caution from some area residents, officials at Howard University say plans to build a biotech research park in Prince George’s County will bring jobs and corporate tax revenues to the suburban region just outside of Washington D.C. 108 acres of Howard-owned land in the area was recently rezoned by the County Council for industrial park use, and while the school has no immediate timetables to begin the project, it aspires to facilitate research expansion and opportunities for minorities in S.T.E.M. disciplines. From the Washington Post: The study found that 2.4 percent of Maryland’s 377 biotech companies are in Prince George’s, compared with 53 percent in Montgomery. Prince George’s had the fewest bioscience employees with 1,573; Montgomery had 12,115. “There is a real concern about building a corporate tax base,” (Howard University Senior Vice-President and Secretary Artis) Hampshire-Cowan said. “This is where high-end jobs come from.” Some residents said they oppose the university’s proposal because Howard initially had asked that the property be zoned mixed-use, which offers the most flexibility, including the building of offices, homes and retail businesses. Hampshire-Cowan said people feared that Howard wanted to sell to developers, but the school was looking for maximum flexibility. “We’re not real estate developers,” she said, “and that’s not what we do.” http://www.hbcudigest.com/2010/07/howard-p...
