DSU's Davis Named MEAC's Top Player (896 hits)

DOVER, Del.- Delaware State University second baseman Scott Davis (jr. Lake Lehman, Pa.) has been selected as the 2011 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Baseball Player-of-the-Year, in voting by league head coaches and sports information representatives.

Davis is joined on the 2011 All-MEAC First Team by teammate Ryan Haas (1B). Delaware State's Jordan Elliott (P), Cameron Cecil (C) and Troy Drummond (OF) were named to the All-MEAC Second Team.

Davis is tops in the MEAC and fourth among all NCAA Division I players with a .439 average (72-for-164). He also leads the MEAC (7th in NCAA) with a .533 on-base percentage. In addition, Davis is third in the MEAC in hits (72), runs scored (49) and doubles (17). He is the third Hornet to be named MEAC Player-of-the-Year, joining Mark Circo (1999) and Ross Babineaux (2009).

Haas is second on the Hornets and fourth in the MEAC with a .372 average (71-for-191). He's also fourth in the league in hits (71) and runs batted in (49), while leading the team with five home runs. In addition, Haas is 3-0 with a 3.05 earned run average as a pitcher this season.
Regular season champion Bethune-Cookman swept the other 2011 MEAC post season awards. Wildcat freshman Scott Garner earned the league's pitcher and rookie-of-the-year awards. BCU's Mervyl Melendez was named MEAC Coach-of-the-Year.

DSU returns to action on Wednesday (May 18) against Maryland-Eastern Shore in the opening round of the 2011 MEAC Tournament in Daytona Beach, Fla. Game time is 10:00 a.m. The Hornets (24-27 overall; 11-7 MEAC) are the tournament's No. 2 seed, while UMES is seeded fifth.

DSU won two of three meetings against UMES during the 2011 regular season.
