JSU Alumni Players Association Announce Football All-Century Team

JACKSON[1], Miss.[2] Today during a 2:00 pm press conference the recently formed Jackson State University Alumni Players Association made its public debut and unveiled its selections for the JSU Football All-Century Team.

Todays announcement is part of Jackson State's celebration of the 100th year of football[3] at the university. The group also pledged to start a scholarship fund to help student-athletes, who have exhausted their playing eligibility, to earn a degree from Jackson State.

JSU heavy weights such as W.C. Gorden[4], Robert Hughes[5], Eddie Payton[6], Willie Richardson[7], Kevin Dent[8], Jimmy Smith and Ben McGee were in attendance.

When you think of 100 years of football[9] at Jackson State it is awesome, scary and wonderful, said Eric Stringfellow[10], the JSU Alumni Players Association Spokesperson/Secretary[11]. The number of great players that have played here is just amazing.

After introducing the all-century team selection committee JSUs current golf[12] coach and former Tigers[13] football great Eddie Payton[14] described the selection process.

The first concept was to have a first, second and third team made up of 66 players, but our history would not allow us those limitations, said Payton[15]. So, we decided to select players by position-by-position. That way we felt this would live up to our history and traditions.

JSU president[16] Dr. Carolyn Meyers commended the committee for taking up the mantle in naming this team.

Im about the luckiest person in the world, Myers said. Ive been here for only 200 days and already this talented group of people has already started helping us to tell the story of Jackson State.

In addition to the naming of the all-century team, the Alumni Players Association will also work in conjunction with the university to honor its former football[17] players and coaches throughout the season with games recognizing the different coaching eras.

JSUs winningest coach[18] W.C. Gorden[19] and JSU Athletics pioneer T.B. Ellis[20] will be honored during the season opener against Concordia College[21]. James Carson and Robert Hughes[22] will be recognized during the Alabama State game on Sept. 24. Alabama State is JSUs first ever opponent on the gridiron. During the ESPNU broadcast Thursday night game (Sept. 29) against Texas Southern, Rod Paige[23] and Ox Clemons will be spotlighted.

Head coach[24] Robert[25] Bob Hill will not share the spotlight with anyone else during the Oct. 8 homecoming game against Arkansas-Pine Bluff and John Merritt[26] and U.S. McPherson will receive their accolades on Nov. 5 when the Tigers host Grambling State. JSUs most recent coaches, James Bell[27] and current head coach[28] Rick Comegy will be highlighted during the Capital City Classic on Nov. 19.
