Posted By: Will Moss on September 08, 2011 FEATURED Content “Student Drinking Behaviors at HBCUs” The Economics Department in conjunction with the Institute for Urban Research (IUR) at Morgan State University proposes to survey and collect alcohol consumption data from 1000 students across all the HBCUs. The research, via an online survey, aims to explore why students drink and what are their approaches to alcohol, in general. The questionnaire for the survey will be programmed and placed on a server by Tap Tech, Inc. To qualify, students must be ages 18 -24, attend a two- or four-year HBCU, have an active, social life, and drink alcohol at least once a week. We will distribute one thousand $15 e-gift certificates among all the colleges to the first students with completed surveys. Therefore, students will be required to use their school’s email account. Following the completion of the online survey, focus groups will be held to better understand and capture the voice of college students on this very important issue. Overall, the research seeks to better understand college drinking culture and derive insights from college students that can be used to reduce excessive consumption. The research will compare reported behaviors and attitudes toward drinking among African American students at HBCUs to that of students at Predominantly White Institutions (PWI). The online surveys will begin mid-September and the research is expected to be completed in April 2012.
