Graduation: New Beginning

Posted By: Camille Daniels on April 28, 2012 As the country (U.S.) gears up for another season of college graduations, it’s time now to reflect, especially for the next generation of African Americans. This is because with so many of us now becoming college graduates it’s time now to ask and to figure out what comes next. The country right now is dealing with a lot, most specifically with financial issues. Although financial issues are nothing new for the majority of the African American community, we as young college graduates have got to figure out how to make a positive out of something that could be seen as a negative rather than a positive, that being…a college graduate. While it is a glorious thing, to say that you are a college graduate right now, especially as a young African American young lady myself it is a bit daunting. It’s daunting because when I begin to think about all that I have to deal with financially the glam of being a college graduate slowly begins to lose its beauty. And this is where I feel all recent African American college graduates have to begin to think about what happens now that they are out of school and whom may not have a job. This is a time that we are at the best part of our lives (our YOUTH) free of any real responsibilities have the ability to if nothing else help create more employment and change everything. Change how we view ourselves, and how we live our lives. Too bring down violence, and to create safer communities. To decrease drug use, and the sexual abuse rate that continue to plague us. Too help decrease the incarnation rate and to improve education amongst us. Too improve our communication skills amongst our families, friends and communities. We as college grads who’ve had the opportunity to graduate at this time full of high tech and rebirth of so many great ideas and so many brand new ideas have a duty. We have the opportunity to do so much, so I encourage us all to network with each other, work together and do more for our community. It needs us, and we need them because we are all one. Put aside pride, and personal opinion and let us all be the change, peace, and healing we all want to be instead of waiting on someone else. Because if we don’t do it, then we’ve done nothing than continue to contribute to the mess done by generations before us, and we have no one to blame but ourselves.
