98.7 Kiss FM
|
Posted By: Camille Daniels on May 04, 2012 On Monday, April 30th, in the heart of NYC the beloved 98.7 Kiss FM, radio station was erased from the airwaves. And in that moment as I listened to the final shows on April 29th, I listened as many of the hosts of Weekend Review and other radio personalities of the station said goodbye to their many listeners. It hurt me to listen as this great station that had been around for almost 31 years was silenced. I couldn’t believe what was happening. I knew what was happening but I couldn’t it was actually happening. It’s amazing the impact a radio show or radio station can have especially on a community, especially on the minority community. It hurts to watch again and again what is happening to the black community in America. It’s always getting silenced somehow some way. And I can’t even blame White America or those in the highest of economic power. Because they’ve set up the rules and if there’s one thing I know, if you don’t know how to play then prepare to receive a major ass whoopin’. I learned that like real estate, in terms of buying a house if you don’t own it, it can be taken at anytime. And this is what happened to Kiss and so many other Urban Radio Stations. All I can say is, it is very, very sad. It’s really time that African Americans especially get into entrepreneurship and do their best to own as much as they can. Simply put, you may not ever, ever be on the same wave length as your white brother en but you can do better at thinking and doing like they do in terms of business. It makes no sense that in 2012 people are still walking around like they don’t know, and have no solutions. The answer to the problems are right there, its all about executing them. The Telecommunication Act of 1996, which in my opinion is nothing but the green light to slowly slip Blacks of all their entrepreneurial goals in radio is a very interesting law or rule. It is something that more need to look at to understand just what is happening in this country regarding blacks and media. It’s certainly something I plan to learn more about and see just what else it may or may not be connected to. Do not fall asleep on this people, 98.7 will not be the last station to be given the boot, if they cut of the head, than its only a matter of time before it starts cutting off other parts in other vital areas.
