PIRATES NEWS: HU Department of Fine and Performing Arts Recognizes Ruth Carter

Posted By: Hija Chang on May 10, 2012 HU Fine and Performing Arts Department presented Academy Award nominated and HU alumnae Ruth E. Carter with the Costume Trailblazer’s Award. The Costume Trailblazer’s Award is presented to those who have made extraordinary strides in the realm of costume design. After graduating from Hampton in 1981, Carter interned at a theatre in her home town of Springfield, Massachusetts. It was not until later while working at the Los Angeles Theatre Center did she meet Spike Lee who hired her to work on his movie School Daze. Some of her other achievements over the years include a few other Spike Lee films, The Five Heartbeats, Love & Basketball, and Four Brothers. She also designed the clothes for the Tina Turner biopic What’s Love got to do With It. Carter has experience with working on a number of popular television shows as well. She is best known for her work on the films Malcolm X and Amistad for each of which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Carter was in the Hampton Roads area for HU's Fashion Week which took place April 17-21. The week featured multiple seminars with topics pertaining to a diverse array of careers in the industry and ended with the Rip the Runway Fashion Show, during which, Carter accepted her award. http://www.hamptonu.edu/news/041612_67_fas...
