Paul Quinn follows 2011 HBCU of the Year with 2012 honors (745 hits)

Bowie, Md. - Paul Quinn College won Male President of the Year and Student Government Association of the Year at the Center for HBCU Media Advocacy's 2012 HBCU Awards in Bowie, Maryland in April. Michael J. Sorrell, Jr. (pictured) had been nominated for the same award in 2010 and 2011. Dexter Evans, president of Paul Quinn's SGA, was nominated for Male Student of the Year.

President Sorrell has served as president of Paul Quinn since 2007. His efforts to reinvent Paul Quinn have consisted of turning the campus's old football field into the nationally acclaimed WE Over Me Farm, instituting selective admission criteria and a campus-wide business casual dress code, having fifteen abandoned buildings demolished, and making Paul Quinn a safer and more secure campus. On the heels of a rebranding effort, Paul Quinn has been covered over the past two years by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

The student government association was honored for living the Quinnite creed of "WE over Me" by energizing the community into various acts of civic engagement. The SGA has made a significant impact on the Paul Quinn College/Highland Hills community by trumping a proposal to turn a neighboring landfill into the largest garbage dump in the southwest; taking local leaders to task to build a grocery store in the community; and rallying against injustices created by castle laws, an issue that made national headlines because of the Trayvon Martin tragedy.
