Alcorn shreds paper, saves trees and energy on the path to environmental sustainability
|
Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on May 09, 2013 Upon the launch of Alcorn State University’s environmental sustainability program, its students, faculty and staff doubled their efforts in conserving natural resources. The first major step was to collect and shred paper items with the help of “Shred-It” trucks during Earth Day celebration on campus April 22-24. “The total amount of paper collected and shredded reached 21,000 pounds,” shared Dr. Betty Roberts, Alcorn’s senior vice president for University Operations and Chief Operating Officer. “It’s a great start on the way to environmental sustainability as every ton of recycled paper saves almost 400 gallons of oil, three cubic yards of landfill and seventeen trees.” Several university divisions participated in the shredding contest, and the winner that collected the most paper was the Office of Financial Aid - 15 bins, or the equivalent of 3,750 pounds. “Our office participated in the contest with a great enthusiasm. It was truly a team effort. Everyone contributed by collecting paper and files eligible to be shredded,” said Director Juanita McKenzie Russell. “Our staff is elated to have won the contest and look forward to celebrating the achievement.” The Office of Financial Aid will receive a catered lunch courtesy of Sodexo. -ALCORN- Alcorn State University is a premier comprehensive land-grant university that develops diverse students into globally-competitive leaders, and applies scientific research through collaborative partnerships that benefit the surrounding communities, state, nation, and world.
