Student Engineering Leader David Hill at Howard University - Donates Portion of Hackathon Award to Luma Lab

Student Engineering Leader David Hill at Howard University - Donates Portion of Hackathon Award to Luma Lab
Posted By: Tech Watch on March 28, 2017

David Hill of Howard University is sporting his new transition smart eye glasses that are modeled after Bill Gates eyewear frames. David’s tech eye glass lenses have single vision carbonate transitions with premium prevencia anti-reflective coating to enhance visual acuity while using computer screens. Recently David’s team members (Alanna Walton, Lateef Adetona, Lucretia Williams and Jeff Beauplan) won the competitive $3,000 first place prize in Washington, DC. The Regional Hackathon on March 25, 2017 is known as HUHACKs at Howard University.

David has a lot in common with Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg beyond eyewear. They all grew up with a rigorous academic curriculum. David completed Ordinary Differential Equations mathematics at 17 years old before entering Howard University and has a deep passion for Computer Science and business.

According to David Hill, “Robert F. Smith, of Vista Equity Partners is another role model that has inspired me. I am also very impressed with Mark Zuckerberg’s outreach to historically black colleges and universities. Computer Science is a contact sport. If a person gets knocked down, they must have the courage and determination to get back up. We have to foster a global mindset within the community and that includes multi-cultural effectiveness. Dr.

Rosabeth Kantor of Harvard University was right when she said, to be effective, students must ‘ride the waves of culture’…think globally, but act locally”.

After spending nearly 24 sleepless hours developing the winning first place “smart app prototype” that stimulates a person heart rate based on desired intensity setting; a musical playlist is created. This software will have great benefit to the ‘smart lifestyle’ for improving health and wellness.

David has big plans for his proceeds from winning the Hackathon. He is donating a portion of his financial award to the Luma Lab Incubator to support the mission of providing under-represented youth and adults with both the tools and access to technology.

He has also volunteered to be a Luma Lab mentor in order to contribute to strengthening the technology landscape in disadvantaged communities in the Washington, DC region. According to David Hill, “I want to raise awareness about the importance of the Luma Lab Innovation Hub and hope more industry leaders will partner with us to strengthen the pipeline of tech talent and innovation. The 3rd Annual #HUHACKS Hackathon was coordinated by Howard University School of Business and School of Engineering. This year’s theme was “The Smart Life” to learn more go to http://www.bschool.howard.edu/huhacks.
