College can be the most stressful period of a young person’s life. Between classes, studying, extracurricular activities and social events, a college student’s schedule can become overwhelming very easily. If you want to come through the semester without working yourself to exhaustion, you need to be careful in how you allocate your time. Here are five tip that can help students survive the semester.


Learn to Say “No”


Part of setting priorities and creating a successful schedule is occasionally being able to decline an invitation to an event or function. If you go to everything you’re asked to attend during your college years, you’ll burn yourself out before you know it. Instead, learn to say “no” when you need to in order to focus on your studies. If you do, you’ll find that controlling your schedule becomes much easier.


Find a Job That’s Flexible


Most college students find it necessary to work while they study in order to support themselves. While there’s nothing wrong with that, you need to find a job that will help you balance your work with your studies. Ideally, you want to find something that will allow you to take some time off when you really need it, such as during finals. It may seem counterintuitive to build downtime into your schedule, but the fact is that it’s an absolute necessity. Many college students attempt to stay on the go constantly, even forgoing time for sleep and relaxation. Though this may work for a few weeks, it will catch up with you soon. Students who don’t get enough sleep have been shown to perform poorly compared to well-rested students. If you want to keep your grades up and make yourself more effective while you are being active, it’s important that you also give yourself adequate time in which to rest.


If Everything Fails, Don’t Be Afraid of an Extra Year


Some college students absolutely dread the idea of letting a 4-year degree program extend into a fifth year. Depending on your circumstances, though, it may actually be the best decision for you. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and think you need to spread the classes you have to take out a little more, don’t be afraid of taking an extra year to finish your degree. In the end, the extra time will probably allow you to put more effort into your studies without setting you back at all in the greater scheme of things.
