4 Ways College Students Can Save Money on Car Repairs (273 hits)

Having a car during college is something of a mixed experience. On the one hand, you have the convenience of easy mobility. On the other, though, you have to keep up with the expenses of maintaining a car during an already financially stressful period of your life. If you’re careful, though, you can keep these expenses to a minimum. Here are four ways you can save money on car repairs during college.

Share a Car with Roommates

If you’re the only one of your roommates who has a car, you might be able to work out an arrangement that splits both the benefits and liabilities of that vehicle. Agree to drive your roommates where they need to go using your car, but on the condition that when maintenance fees arise, they’ll pay for part of them. This kind of arrangement can be very workable between two or more people who mostly go to the same few places, such as college roommates.

Get Used Parts When it’s Time for Repairs

A very easy way to reduce the cost of any repair is to execute it with used car parts. Buying used car parts is a great way to get what you need on a budget. If you can install them yourself, you should be able to keep even potentially costly repairs well within a reasonable budget.

Do Regular Maintenance

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. This holds very true when it comes to cars, which is why you need to keep up with regular maintenance like oil and filter changes. By doing normal maintenance on a periodic basis, you can keep your car running well and prevent more major repairs from needing to be made.

Check out Your College’s Student Discount Programs

Most colleges partner with local businesses to offer discounts to students. If you’re lucky, your college’s discount program may include a local auto repair shop. Though you should try to do your own repairs whenever possible, there may be some that are beyond your abilities. When these repairs come up, it can be extremely helpful to be able to turn to a mechanic who offers student discounts.

These are just a few of the ways you can keep a car in college without the cost of maintenance and repairs running you into the ground. By following these tips, you should be able to afford a car, even on a student’s budget.
