STEM degrees continue to be exceedingly popular among college students and the sciences have captured the human mind for thousands of years. If youíre a science nerd currently attending high school, you may be wondering how you can best prepare for college. Hereís how to do it.

They Take Science Courses

One of the best ways to prepare for science degree programs in college is to enroll in high school science programs. Become involved in these programs and forge good relationships with your instructors. Take advanced classes if you can. Advanced or AP courses can not only give you an idea of how college courses will be but also may award transferable credits. These credits can cover basic courses in college and allow you to start off with more advanced classes. This allows students to get more out of their college education.

They Join Science Clubs

Many schools have science clubs as part of their extracurricular activity offerings. Students with a passion for science should absolutely be involved in these clubs. If your school does not have a science club of some sort, consider founding your own. The initiative and commitment it takes to do so looks excellent on a college application. Even being involved in a science club as an extracurricular activity will help you get into the college you want.

They Read and Learn on Their Own

Students with a passion for science donít just learn in school. They also take the time to study on their own. Read non-fiction books about scientific topics that interest you. New scientific discoveries happen every day, making it beneficial to keep up with the science and technology sections of major newspapers. To prepare for college-level courses and professional involvement in science, consider reading papers and studies published in scientific journals as well.

They Learn about the College Application Process

Aside from learning about science-related topics, science nerds looking forward to their college careers should also learn as much as they can about the college admissions process. Consider your college options and what kind of science degree you want to get. Certain schools have science programs with better reputations than others. Learn about admission requirements to each individual school and visit if you can to see if that school is a good fit for you. Pay close attention to due dates for applications and materials.

Science nerds should view high school as prep time for college. Use these preparation tips to make the most of your time in high school. By doing so, you will start off your college career the right way.
