Social Ventures Director
Position Summary:

Tides Client Services (CS) Department interacts directly with Tides clients to provide strategic and management services to drive high impact, effective philanthropy and to scale promising social ventures. The Social Ventures Director will be the primary leader for Tides ongoing engagement with existing and new social venture/fiscal sponsorship clients to respond to, design, and scale clients’ strategic goals. Other responsibilities include: establishing Tides as an expert and connector in key social venture ecosystems and organizational expertise areas; developing, delivering and marketing a core and enhanced services model for Tides to offer clients; assisting with Tides’ Affiliate Consulting referral program; contributing to Tides’ communications, voice and influence activities; and coordinating a cross-departmental conference engagement strategy. This position will be located in San Francisco.

Essential Functions:


•Deepen Tides expertise and knowledge management in specific social venture ecosystems, organizational expertise areas, and issue areas

•Establish and roll out a standardized engagement model for all Client Services Staff and staff in additional Tides departments to:

•Market and deliver additional and expanded services to accelerate the growth and development of existing clients

•Expand CS and Tides’ ability to deepening our understanding and expertise around new issue areas, geographies and approaches that are aligned with clients’ interests and impact strategies

•Personally model and practice the curation and delivery of expertise to a set of clients around a relevant social venture organizational expertise area and/or innovative nonprofit management and acceleration approach

•Work closely with the Vice President, Strategic Partnerships & Communications on new and existing client engagement models to ensure consistent and compelling service offerings and delivery

•Develop matrix staffing approaches with all Tides departments, including Human Relations, and Finance teams, that accelerate success, growth and impact of social venture clients

•Supervise CS Social Venture Senior Advisors and Social Venture Advisors to achieve organizational goals, mission and priorities while also helping staff to achieve clearly defined and quantifiable individual professional goals

•Train and mentor CS team on new models for client engagement and track successes and lessons learned
•Develop a pipeline of specific new business opportunities and close those clients to achieve annual enhanced service goal for CS Department:

1.Coordinate client requirements

2.Develop and negotiate contracts

3.Integrate contract requirements with Tides Strategic Partnerships

•Develop and maintain broad external relations with desired clients in social venture ecosystems, organizational expertise areas, and issue areas; ensure strategies and capabilities of new clients are aligned with Tides’ objectives

•Establish and execute tactical plans in support of Tides’ strategic growth and expansion in new client sectors

•Enhance Tides ability to work with social venture clients to measure and evaluate impact of their organization’s operations.

•Align with COO and other CS Directors to mine the Tides Client Network for prospective new clients, deeper engagement with current clients and enhanced services opportunities


•Finalize work to date and roll out Tides’ differentiated service models, pricing, and aligned marketing materials to social venture clients

•Partner with other Tides departments on marketing to existing clients evolving impact

•Initiate and work collaboratively to develop client proposals and presentation materials including direct content contribution to Tides branding, marketing and website efforts

•Assist with the Tides Affiliate Consulting Program, which connects clients to a pre-vetted set of expert consultants. Responsible for assessing and expanding the quality and range of topics offered by affiliate consultants


•Lead and coordinate Client Services engagement with the Communications team in advancing Tides’ social venture expertise in Tides’ strategic voice and influence activities in written publications and events

•Manage Client Services’ attendance and presence at key industry events and conferences in specific social venture ecosystems, organizational expertise areas, and issue areas. Personally model best practices for high value engagement and business development at industry events, including those sponsored or hosted by Tides.

•Demonstrate commitment to cross boundaries inside and outside the organization as needed to drive acceleration and improve relationships between people and groups


•Drive the Tides Vision, Mission and Approach into action

•Take responsibility for specific deliverables in the 2017 Strategic Path, i.e., 1) New service model to accelerate impact, 2) Upgraded and improved services to contribute to financial strength, 3) Positioning for new client business, and 4) Stronger voice in Social Impact field

•Serve as a Primary Liaison for Client Services social venture services with Strategic Partnerships department

•Manage a small and strategic portfolio of high-touch Tides clients

•Work interactively with the COO to align work and goals in Client Services for mutual benefit and enhancement

•Serve as a member of the Tides Operations or Business Development Teams

Qualifications & Requirements
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

•B.S. or higher degree MBA preferred, or equivalent experience

•15+ years of relevant and applicable work experience in:

•Field of nonprofit management or nonprofit consulting

•Demonstrated experience in new business generation

•Business and client development, the structuring of complex offers, and negotiating terms

•A strong understanding of the social ventures and intermediary sector and Tides Vision, Mission and Approach

•Deep knowledge in fields of social innovation and social justice, including nonprofit fundraising, governance, and impact and evaluation

•Experience in training and mentoring a consultative selling team

•Ability to build long term relationships with good networking track record

•Demonstrated ability to prioritize amongst multiple commitments, and to drive multiple high profile and complex projects simultaneously in a challenging and fluid environment

•Ability to identify key influencers and market drivers that impact Tides’ introduction and expansion

•Ability to impact the sustainability of the organization by differentiating core and enhanced services

•Demonstrated ability to read and interpret contracts, analyze market trends, model potential solutions, interpret market research, and review technical data

•Demonstrated success with establishing or expanding business in new markets

•Ability to manage relationship and excellent communication and listening skills with senior levels of management and all levels of staff and clients

•Excellent verbal, written and presentation skills
