Eligible students must be enrolled full-time at a two-year or four-year college or university pursuing a Bachelors, Associate, or L.P.N. degree with at least one year of school remaining. The scholarships are funded by the National Black Nurses Association, Inc., founded in 1971 as a non-profit organization in the state of Ohio. The purpose of the organization is to support the educational and professional advancement of ethnic minority nurses, and to research and educate the general public and well as healthcare members on health issues pertaining to ethnic minority groups.

The National Black Nurses Association, Inc. has 76 chapters across the country. The organization serves the needs of over 150,000 African-American nurses in the U.S.
