In 2012, 49 million people lived in households without enough food to eat. More and more people are relying on food banks and pantries. Those programs need donations from individuals to keep supplying meals. On September 23, just before the start of the Jewish High Holidays, DoSomething.org and BBYO kicked off the Can-Tribute campaign, aligning its launch with Yom Kippur, a religious day of fasting on which observers take part in the tradition of collecting food for the needy. By running a Hunger Games-themed food drive and rallying friends and their communities, participants can not only help stock local food banks, but earn a chance to win a $5,000 scholarship for school.
