Bad experiences can sometimes cause profoundly good changes in people’s lives. As a criminal defense attorney, I often work with clients who have been charged with DUIs. For many people, facing DUI charges, especially if this is their first encounter with the criminal justice system, can be one of the most stressful experiences in their lives. Out of this difficult experience, though, people may come to see themselves in new ways and find new inspiration for the future.
Sometimes people become inspired by their brush with the criminal law system to become lawyers themselves. We want to encourage and support these people. I believe that using your own difficult experiences to help others in similar situations is one of the highest callings that exist. People who have been charged with criminal offenses, such as DUIs, or who have experienced people they care about being charged, bring a much-needed perspective to the legal profession. Having seen the system from the inside, they have a unique insight to offer to others. That is why I am launching the Law Office of Amy Chapman Scholarship to help and encourage students who are seeking a law degree after being affected by a DUI charge. I am seeking applications from students who have already been accepted into a U.S. law school and who will be starting their studies in the Fall of 2018. I will select one applicant to receive a $1,000 scholarship, paid to their university, to be used for tuition. I require applicants to write short essays, and will select the award recipient based on those essays. I am looking for applicants who I believe will make a significant contribution to the legal profession. How to Apply for the Law Office of Amy Chapman Scholarship To apply, you must submit a one-to-three page typed essay describing how your life has been affected positively and/or negatively by a DUI charge and describing the impact of the charge on your decision to pursue a law degree. In addition to the essay, you must also submit the following: · A completed Scholarship Application Form; · An official, complete copy of your college transcripts; · An acceptance letter from an accredited law school within the United States; and · Proof of legal residency in the U.S. (i.e., birth certificate, passport, permanent resident card, etc.). The deadline for submitting the essay and all other required documents is August 4, 2018. Fill out the Application. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must — · Be a U.S. citizen or otherwise authorized to work in the United States; · Be accepted to a law school within the U.S.; · Be starting their first year of law school in Fall 2018; and · Demonstrate academic achievement as reflected by an undergraduate cumulative minimum 3.0 GPA Read the Requirement Form Notification of Award I will notify the Law Office of Amy Chapman Scholarship award recipient of my selection on or about August 11, 2018. Note: Recipient is expected to submit receipts in accordance with IRS regulations. At the Law Office of Amy Chapman, I work hard to provide a vigorous defense for my clients. I use my considerable experience, knowledge, skills, and relationships to ensure that my clients get the most effective defense possible throughout the legal proceedings and that they have the best possible outcome. I know that my clients have far more going on in their lives than just the charges against them. After the legal proceedings are done, my job may be over, but am gratified to know that so many of my clients get back on track with their lives and are often able to use their brush with the law in unexpected and positive ways. That is why I am so excited to offer this scholarship to law students who have drawn inspiration from their experience with DUI charges. These students are role models who show others, by their example, how bad experiences can provide inspiration for new directions in their own lives. These students also have the potential to touch many other lives. Their real-world experience gives them much to offer the legal profession and to their future clients. I hope my scholarship will bring more recognition to these courageous students. I want all law students who have been affected by DUI charges to know they are appreciated and needed.
