You can earn tuition for school and a monthly salary—not to mention a guaranteed career straight out of college - as a Coast Guard Officer.

The College Student Pre-Commissioning Initiative (CSPI) is a scholarship program designed for college juniors and seniors attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Hispanic Serving Institutions, and Tribal Colleges and Universities who demonstrate a high caliber of academic and leadership excellence. Students enrolled in CSPI receive two years of fully paid tuition while they participate in four hours of weekly Coast Guard duties during the school year, plus some additional training during breaks.

The CSPI program provides hands-on training to students who have a desire to succeed. Program participants who complete their bachelor’s degree receive a guaranteed commission as an officer in the U.S. Coast Guard upon graduating Officer Candidate School (OCS).

CSPI participants receive:
  • Competitive salary (including up to $3,600 monthly salary while in school)
  • Up to two years of tuition, fees, and books
  • Paid medical and dental insurance
  • 30 days annual paid vacation
  • Summer leadership training
  • A starting salary of approximately $60,000 upon graduation and completion of Officer Candidate School
Students need to be US citizens to be eligible.
