The Fellows Program has three major components: field placements, seminars and focus weeks.
The five field placements are the cornerstone of the Fellows Program. Each Fellow works on an individually tailored project in a business, labor union, government agency, nonprofit organization and political campaign. These placements provide the opportunity for Fellows to assess how organizations accomplish their goals in the social, political, economic and cultural fabric of a city. Weekly seminars allow Fellows to reflect on their field placements and develop critical leadership skills such as negotiation and project management. Interviews with influential men and women – from members of Congress to CEOs of Fortune 500 companies to grassroots community members – give Fellows the rare opportunity to explore the motivation, method and logic of skillful leadership. Focus weeks allow Fellows to sharpen their knowledge of a particular issue or sector by learning from individuals with varying and often conflicting viewpoints.
Fellows Program graduates make innumerable contributions to their communities, working with private, public and nonprofit agencies and institutions – across the country and around the globe. Participation in the Fellows Program is only the beginning of a Fellow’s trajectory. The Fellows Program develops the skills and relationships young leaders need to make a difference in New York City, and beyond, preparing tomorrow’s leaders for a lifetime of civic engagement and community empowerment.
