Phoenix VA to launch non-emergency ambulance service for veterans

New Transportation Service Launches in August
Veterans in the Phoenix area will soon have access to expanded medical transportation options through a new non-emergency ambulance service operated by the Phoenix VA Health Care System. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs announced the initiative, which is set to launch in August 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to improve healthcare access for veterans across the metropolitan region.
The program will initially deploy three VA-owned ambulances, each staffed by VA-employed paramedics and emergency medical technicians. Unlike privately contracted services, these ambulances will be operated entirely in-house by the VA system, giving the department greater control over scheduling, response times, and service quality.
Addressing Transportation Challenges
Elijah Ditter, director of the Phoenix VA Health Care System, emphasized the significance of the new service. "Launching Phoenix VA ambulance services is a significant improvement," Ditter stated. "This new service will help us deliver faster, safer, and more reliable non-emergency transportation for veterans across the Phoenix metropolitan area."
Transportation has long been a barrier to healthcare access for many veterans, particularly those who require medical transport between facilities or to scheduled appointments. VA officials indicated that the in-house ambulance fleet is expected to reduce transportation delays while providing greater flexibility to meet the growing demand for medical transport services. The new ambulances will work alongside the department's existing network of contracted transportation providers rather than replacing them.
Dual-Purpose Mission
Beyond routine medical transportation, the ambulances will serve a broader community role by supporting the VA's Fourth Mission. This designation allows the Department of Veterans Affairs to function as a federal medical resource during community-wide emergencies and disasters when assistance is requested. This dual-purpose capability ensures the investment serves both veterans and the wider Phoenix community during times of crisis.
Part of Nationwide Expansion
The Phoenix initiative reflects a broader push by the Department of Veterans Affairs to expand healthcare access and services nationwide. According to the department, more than 150,000 new veterans are expected to enroll in VA health care in 2026, underscoring the need for enhanced transportation infrastructure and support services.
The non-emergency ambulance service is scheduled to begin operations in August, providing veterans in the Phoenix metropolitan area with another reliable option for accessing the medical care they've earned through their service.
