Flag at half staff or not... Posted on 07-17-2005

I would like to know your opinion on this matter. Here's the situation: My friend Tony was involved in a robbery. Tony had a bebe gun and him and his friend decided to rob the pizza man. Well the pizza man had a gun and shot Tony. It was dark so his friend ran and when the Pizza man shot, the gun hit Tony in the head and he was ****. Now I've known Tony since kindergarten and he has always been troubled because his mother is a crackhead but he was being raised by his grandmother. Nevertheless Tony was a good person. He was captain of the football team and like the only black boy on the diving team. He was very athletic and he was always making someone laugh. The school was hardly acknowleding his death so I took it upon myself to go to the principal and ask that the flag be put to half staff. After all....he was a student and out of respect for his family and out of respect of the students who needed to feel some closure I felt this was appropriate. I knew him personally and he was always a good person. Well my principal made sure the flag was at half staff the next day. Not many people know to this day that it was me who went to the principal but little did I know this caused a whole confrontation. Many people wrote the paper saying this was not right considering the circumstances. I didnt feel Tony DESERVED to die but he did pay the ultimate price for his actions. One lady was saying how the flag isnt even at half mast for the soilders who die in Iraq...My response to her was that, if that was the case the flag would be at half-staff everyday. There were people who felt it was right and some who felt it was wrong. What do you think?

i think that both sides are right. it's true that he did not die of the most noble causes but it is also true that he is **** undeservingly. i don't know what i would have done if i was that principal. but i think that you did the right thing in going to the principal in the first place.

And it's not a racial issue. Technically the United States flag is only to be flown at half mast for certain memorials sequences or the death of a government official (or memorial day) usually by order of the governor of your state or the president himself. I don't think their argument was about circumstance, it was probably about proper etiquette/decorum. That being said, I do commend your principal for being sensitive to the needs and concerns of his student body. He did the wrong thing for the right reason. :-)

Yeah...I wouldnt make it racial but people in the city was....only becuase a white girl got rapped and **** 2 years ago. She was basically known as a hoe and everyone figured she put herself in the situation and they named a whole HIGHWAY after her...but they were acting funky about lowering the flag for Tony.
