List of HBCUs I'm Applying to next year! Posted on 05-14-2008
MissIndia

I plan on applying to : Morgan State Norfolk State Hampton University Howard University(MY NUMBER ONE CHOICE) As of now, I have a cumulative GPA of 2.4 & a year-to-date GPA of 3.0.It's low because I slacked my sophomore year, but I have really, really improved as a student. I am enrolled in a Pharmacy Technician program at my school that is three credits towards my graduation & also allows me to receive two college credits. I have taken my state exam & I am now a certified pharmacy technician. I have been doing clinicals at a long term care pharmacy. I am currently doing clinicals at Walgreens. The both of these clinical experiences count as community service hours as well. I am also volunteering at a well respected local hospital. I have work experience & I am currently employed. Throughout my high school career, I have been in the following extracurricular activities: Key Club, Drama Club, FCCLA, SCA Vice President of Activities, LGS, History Society, Uzuri, Photography Club, & I've even been a member of Who's Who Among American High School Students. I plan to apply to Howard University Early Action this fall! What colleges listed above do you honestly believe I'll be admitted to?

Hey kennini, Here is some good advice. Looking at your GPA, you could get into those three schools but your SATs and ACTs must be on point. Meaning high scores. Also, extra curricular activities and very good recommendations are always great as well before in some cases, schools will look at these things moreso than an SAT score. Did you write an essay? Explain why you would want to go to Howard, Clark and the other school you mentioned and tell them (no begging to desparity) but sell yourself. There are thousands of applicants before you that possibly have the requirements that they seek but again, you must sell yourself to jump in front of those in the same shoes as you. I know. I will say that I had a good GPA, low SAT/ACTs, plenty of extracurricular and refs but I didn't get into Fall but Summer at one school and Fall with the other. So, if you don't get in, try for a different term where the requirements are lower like me. Good luck and I hope this helps.

I wouldn't count out students who don't have high grades in AP courses. Counselors want to see students challenging themselves in school. They'd much rather see a C- in an AP course as opposed to a C- in a regular course. I had a C in two of my AP courses from Junior year and I was accepted to Howard earlier this year. Just Evy's $0.02
I am not counting out students with low grades, Cs are different from failing. And I did not say the girl did not get accepted, wait listed maybe. I do not know. I am only a student working in the admissions office. AP is different from regular courses, yes, but they still want to make sure you do well when you commit to harder classes. And a C- at my instituion means you will have repeat the course, i.e. you failed. So our admissions officers look for people who have proven to do better. I do not know the scale for HU, I am just saying what I have noticed. Also you could have scored overrall better on your admissions than other students with your same grades, i.e. test scores, application, essay, or extra-curriculars. I am just going to be honest. The applicant pool for college grows more competive each year. And like I said before, if she really commits to her studies her senior year and shows Howard that they are her top choice she could get accepted. That's just been my experience.

1. Sounds fair enough, different requirements for different institutions. 2. Definitely gonna cosign on that b/c what someone lacks in one area can be made up for in another.

Get that GPA up! Colleges love improvement, true but from what you said you did well freshman yr then failed two classes I'm not tryin to be mean but it may look like you just got tired of workin and got lazy that yr. Right nw the minimum SAT for both HU's is a good 1,000 and they put major emphasis on this so with you failing two classes you need to go above and beyond that.
