This topic is to address issues and concerns in black colleges and communities. It's all good to joke around and have fun, but we really need to address some issues and concerns. There is a srious problem inour black institution closing or not haveing acurate funding. Also, the mindset of the students aren't the same. It seems like we are going backward instead of forward. Please, lets talking about some problems and some solutions to those problems. It all starts with us, the young and the black. We have the power to change things if we all get on one page, or at least the same chapter.........
FOR GOD, FOR CENTRAL, FOR STATE...
CENTRAL STATE UNIVERSITY
MARAUDERS
Agree with a lot of what you are saying, but then again what you are saying goes against many of the beliefs that I have experienced associating with african americans. I do agree that we need to do something about admissions and stop letting any and everyone in our HBCU's because it would definitely make our schools better. But if HBCU's turn down thousands of blacks who are under qualified and lack the motivation and desire to succeed then what would that say about the black community. How could black people argue against that? It couldn't be racism or discrimination. We would be forced to addressed that the true problem is not what others (the "man", Bush, Republicans, etc.) are doing to us, but what we are doing to ourselves. Ever since I came to this school, I have been very disappointed with the majority of black people that I meet. Many of them can't past Pre-Cal (which has been really dumbed down compared to what I had in high school) or write a basic English paper. It is not that the majority of them can't do it. They just lack the motivation and are lazy. They are more concerned about why they can't wear a doorag or have to wear a suit instead of doing their work.
Another issue is that many blacks lack the mindset to succeed. They are too concern with who is supposedly trying to keep them down, instead of finding ways to build themselves up. Black people complain about not having enough opportunities, yet they don't take advantage of the opportunities that they have. They get discouraged by failure or misfortune and then going into their little arguement about how the world doesn't want the black man to succeed. We need to have the mentality that if one door shuts then we will find another open door or even create our own doors. There is so much more, but it would take up a 400 page book about the issues at our black schools and in our communities.
Appathy:lack to interest in Government and social issues...
I couldn't agree more. Also there is a lack of giving back. Universities depend highly on alumni giving, and frankly, black alumni don't care enough to give anything back. I'm not saying that they have to give huge Oprah sized amounts of money every year. But i do think it is important too give SOMETHING back. I do my workstudy in the Office of Alumni Affairs and I was shocked to learn of the percentage of graduates who give back to my college. It's a joke, especially in comarison to other white schools (including white private and state institutions). Sadly, J is be right and apathy may one day be the death of our HBCU's.
every since i can remeber... when my parents and i started talking college i knew it had to be an HBCU... im 16 turinin 17 (in 14 days) although i dont hear about HBCU's like my parents claimed to have... there are still alot of high schoolers that are looking forward to being surrounded by their people, unfortunately im not liking the fact that when i started looking at HBCU's and now when looking at them i notice the percentage of white/non hispanic in HBCU"S are growing... but i couldnt be anywhere else... i couldnt go anywhere else.. but an HBCU... hopefully NSU....

Just wanted to cosign both of your remarks from inside FISK U. It is TRULY about what we are doing to ourselves that might spell bad news for the future of HBCUs. But how can we take pro-active (instead of reactive) steps to get our stuff together? How can we get our peers to be focused on making their own way when they are distracted by bullcrap like apartments, cable, and how many ways they can violate the dress code? If you look even at some of the posts on this board, you could be ashamed...Why is it important who has the "hella-fyne females", "crunk-tight parties", and cable in the dorm rooms? Look at the posts on the "reasons for going to an HBCU"...Not saying that college is SOLELY about books, but some of the perspectives on here leave much to be desired and I think its representative of the pool HBCU admissions people have to pull from.
I have even had students who visit tell me they don't like FISK BECAUSE our scholarship standards are too high and challenge me as to how FISK could possibly be helping the black community when its standards are so high that most people can't get scholarships. Is that some backward s--- or what?
Here's another one: this young lady from Atlanta visited recently and was carried on a young man's back. I asked if she had a problem walking and she told me she didn't want to get her new Air Force 1's dirty!!!!!!! Needless to say, I quickly made it clear that FISK was probably not for her :-)...
I guess I'm just ranting to say "we make ourselves look bad"...

I agree with you 100%. Some of the students priorties are so backwards. They are not coming to school for the right reasons.
hello all...i know this is a little off the topic but what about Shaw Uinversity? Have you all heard anything about the school. B/c im attending next year and i would like to know someting about it. I've talked to some people and they have told me about the outside of the school, im not really concerned about the outside. I've been told we dont have any cable and that's fine with me b/c u go to school to learn not watch tv. But if anyone could help me on that I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks God Bless!
To all who wants to listen you'll here complained about how you saw other students complaining bout the state of your university I just have a couple of comments.
1. Don't ever let anyone change your own perspective. If you feel offended about people talking bad about your school tell them where to shove it.
2. If you have a problem with the admissions standards maybe you shouldn't be there. Yes the whole purpose of HBCU's is to help african americans but what kind of help are they giving if they lower ther scholarships standards. Look at most black owned companies they still hire the most qualified person whether you are black white or latino. Lowering their standards wont do anything for us black people. What we need to do is raise them get our chiodren on a higher level.
3. Dont just complain one said that they have a lot of students who complain but have you've ever walked in theris shoes. I know personally i complained about my own school at one point in time but as i have matured i have realized that i am at the best place for me. Maybe they haven't found that yet. Give them time they will realize what they have.
I just wanted to say that going to HBCU was my #1 priority. My grandfather went to Grambling so in turn i came to Grambling yea maybe we don't have the best dorms, food, or even campus but id on know that we have quality professors that care for us and do whatever it takes to make sure we get where we are and were we want to be.

Cosigns....that Tiger Pride y'all will neva know anything about....
it is nice that we identified the problem but as students we need to now come up with a solution. if are schools' alumni contributions are declining then present it to ur SGA, let ur elected officials work for u, we have all the resources we need right at our finger tips, put it to use....help to create some static so people will take notice, if not then what help did it do tp talk about it
You have all talked about how many of the students today have things backwards. For one I am a rising freshman, My number ONE GOAL HAS ALWAYS BEEN TO SUCCEED IN WHATEVER I CHOSE TO DO. No, I am not concerned with having a nice fancy dorm with cable and all the other things. I will go to school to get an education, but there's also a time to relax and have fun! Which it doesn't consist of going to a "crunk" party.I TOTALLY AGREE THAT YOU AS ADULTS, AND WE AS IN TEENAGERS, NEED TO WORK TOGETHER TO MAKE SOME CHANGES!
In All things Give thanks...I thank God for this moment in Time.
